I have a question. My sons and daughters-in-laws gave me a gift certificate last Mother's Day for a swedish massage. Of course, here I am almost a year later and it's about to expire. Is there any contraindication to getting a massage since I'm on Coumadin? Just wondering if I need to call the place and see if I need my doc's OK or what. LINDA

Can't hurt to get your doc's OK but I've been getting Swedish massages since 5 weeks after surgery. My cardiologist just said to warn the massage therapist to be careful around the incision site. The relief and relaxation were just what I needed! Yea for massage!

Linda,

I have had no issues although I do request that the therapist not push or knead too hard on the muscles. Don't know if it really matters but, since I still get the desired results, I figure it can't hurt to go with "more gentle".

Enjoy.

Massage

I've had several massages since my AVR surgery and despite being on coumadin, I've had no problems. I always have my therapist get as aggressive as she can. While I do bruise easier since going on coumadin, I've never had bruises from an aggressive massage.

I've arranged for my therapist come to school to do massages for my staff this week. I can't wait for her to get her hands on me.

Use the gift certificate. Your therapist should be able to modify technique to accommodate your comfort zone.

Listen to what the other have said (ignore Ross) and go for it.

You'll love it.
Don't pass this up.

Yes, Ross and I are jealous

Enjoy!

Enjoy your massage! The center where I had my cardiac rehab actually had a special massage room just for the heart patients, many of whom are on anti-coagulants. I enjoy deep tissue massages every other month, and I always request for them to go extra deep and hard. I'm on an extremely high dose of coumadin, 150mg a week, and have never had any problems due to a massage. Once a massage therapist asked for a doctors note before she would give me a massage. When I told my doctor about this, my doc laughed and said she never heard of such a thing! Massages are safe!
