Hey I met with Dr. Moront yesterday and asked him every question under the clear blue sky, and luckily unlike a fellow poster in valve selection with some Dr. T who went ape **** in VA, Dr. Moront was more than open for any questions about his credentials and knowledge.

First, his minimaly invasive is cutting the top 8mm of my sternum, little over 3inches. I asked about the benefits of this, he said enables easier deep breathing and ability to cough because the whole sternum isnt cut. Also the slight cosmetic advantage vs. a nice long incision.

I asked about how many freestlye porcine valves he has put in, the one he recomends and uses religiously. He has put in over 750 in the past 11 years. I asked how many have gone bad since then and have needed replaced. He smiled, only 3! and they were drug abusers and injured the valve after 6 years. I then asked how many mechanical valves, he used to put only them in when he started and just a shade under 300 but doesnt use them quite nearly as often any more because he has loved the results of the porcine valve.

He wanted me to have it done next week because he has 4-5 surgeons flying in from around the country to watch him operate and perform his minimally invasive approach. He teaches this method and shows other doctors to help them develop the skills to be able to do it also for our sake. I cannot have it that soon because of school and just not really mentally prepared for it quite yet. I told him i was looking early june. He said he has another group coming in the first week to observe once again. I told him I would be delighted to be one of his showcases because im a perfect candidate for it, relatively no complications. Also if its a way to help out the medical community and give more surgeons more knowledge on how to make this less painful for us, I am all for it.

Overall I feel a ton better now that the questions have been answered and I feel bad for all those out there who have to go and see 3+ surgeons before they find one they are comfortable with and can develop a rapport with. For me, personal attention is key. Having worked in the hospitals, i have seen the standard of care drop off in some places, and Nurses and Attendings see you as another number rather than a fellow person and for the secretary or nurse to add a personal touch to their care does make all the difference in the world, and i feel Dr. Moront does this with grace. He gave me a call on a sunday morning from his cell phone to talk about my lab results last month. After we were done talking about that, the conversation drifted towards sports for a couple minutes before i had to get back to homework.

So, everything is set and ready to go, now i get the JOY of waiting 2 and a half months for my surgery:) which sucks ass but oh well. The date is either the 5th or 6th of June.

Good luck! If this wasn't my second surgery I would probably be getting a tissue valve put in as well.

There is nothing better to ease the way than confidence in your surgeon. The next few months will fly by and I am sure you will be a "perfect example" for your surgeon to show off. Be sure to let us know when the date is set in stone so we can add you to the calendar.

gkenny, I'm sorry to hear about your cardiologists staff being inadequate and unpleasant. I would recommend mine but seeing as your in MO, that would be quite the drive. Everytime i go into his office and see him, we go back and forth like brothers over sports or why my cardiac cath was bruised two weeks after he did it, I called it a hack job to him and his jaw dropped and called me a lightweight and i would probably bruise if a girl punched me, i asked him for a demonstration:D So personally I am GRACED with both an amazing cardiologist and a surgeon who are willing to help and explain and not stand on their PhD soap box and preach to me. I wish everyone the best of luck finding the right staff, because this is our health and never settle for anything less then what we deserve, which is the highest standard of care.

Glad to hear you've set the date and the biggest decisions are behind you. Take your "waiting" time to prepare for the hospital stay and for recovery at home. Also, don't forget to do some fun stuff now as for a few months post-up you will be very busy with recovery.

Glad you got your questions answered. Best of luck with the surgery it will soon come around so have some fun and take care.
