Today I saw my cardio surgeon after a CT scan, and we scheduled my surgery for June 10th. I am going to go in on the 9th and have an angiogram done and then stay over the night before. I figured that way they could maybe give me somthing to sleep that night!
When looking at the CT my surgeon did a quick measure of the aortic root and said it was at 5.8 cm, but he is actually more concerned about the valve. It is a bovine tissue valve- and has lasted nearly 11 years. The number they have been measuring - the gradiant of the valve- is up to 54- and im not sure what that means besides that a "normal" number should be 15-20. So it is time. It is getting more real with an actual date.

Well, 5.8cm is a really big aortic root, so it's good you are getting both taken care of. You will do fine; it won't be much different from your first OHS.

Thoughts and prayers will be with you.

Where are you having your surgery? I had mine at Fairview Southdale, but the surgeon I had is no longer there.

where?

where?

Im going to Methodist Heart Center - park of Park Nicollet in St Lois Park

I can't help you with the issue around your Aortic root but I can tell you that my bicuspid valve pre-surgery had a top gradient of 115. The 54 number is higher than what is considered "normal", 20.

I'll just be happy to know your not walking around as a time bomb. Why 5.8 isn't bothering them has me troubled. Guess it's because it's not in them!

Hello! Hello!

Hello! Hello!

Wow! We really are surgery buddies! So I can say I understand what your going through. Our OR visitis are only about a week apart!! We will have to talk more over the next few weeks, maybe start a countdown! I dont sense alot of nervousness in your words,..are you doing ok with it? Im good one day and feel brave and confident, and some others I am a complete mess and want to pull the covers back over my head,..just comes and goes.Tal more soon!

If your hospital is anything like where I had mine done they will give you some sleeping pills the night before...
I found it comforting to settle in to the hospital the night before my OHS and get to see a little of the routine and have a wander around , I even had to wash my hair in that antiseptic stuff which made it feel like straw!...LOL....

Now that you are booked in you can go do some relaxing stuff until your date arrives .
