My surgery has been rescheduled for 01/12/04 now that I'm over the flu.
I am getting very upset, anxious, depressed, scared, terrified.
Any suggestions on how to deal with this pre-op?
Everyone assures me that "it will be fine, you'll be fine, the doctors know what they are doing , they are very good" blah, blah, blah. These are the people that are NOT having their chest ripped open in a few days!!
Help

Val,
You wouldn't be normal if you didn't have these feelings.
I had to re-schedule my surgery in '96 because I caught a cold.
I know how you are feeling but after it was all over I realized I didn't need to get that upset.
It is very scary stuff.
Those people who tell you all will be OK havn't been on that table themselves, but they are just trying to give you encouragement.
Hopefully all will go smoothly for you.

Val hang in there.

I know it's tough. I've learned through my own experience as well as that of others, that these delays are part of some sort of a plan. Don't question it. Take the extra time to get well and stay well. Take care of little things that you didn't get done before.
This will proceed in it's own due time.

The surgery itself, well you be out of it, so it's no big deal. Recovery is rough, I will not lie, but many have gone before you and many will after you, you can handle it.

Remember that you do not go alone. We are all here going with you every step of the way. ;)

Ross had something, like you, and they kept putting his off. This has happened to several and it's disheartening (pardon the pun) but they all eventually got there, albeit later than expected or wanted. We all have our hearts set on that first date and when it doesn't happen, we have to re-up our psyches and that's really hard when it's something this serious. Fear goes with this surgery - any surgery, really - but we can't run fast enough to avoid it. It will catch up to you anyway, but you will last til it catches you. It's now 4 days and counting and the DAY will be here before you know it. I think the Xanax is a great idea! Call your dr and get a few to take these few days.

Hi Val

I sympathise with you my surgery was planned for Nov 6th I'd had all the pre op stuff done then they called me on Nov 5th and cancelled, and they said I would have to go back on the waiting list,

So I can imagine how you feel, you prepare yourself and then are told it is not going ahead,

I eventually had my surgery on Jan 2nd 2002

As we always say the waiting is the worst, try and relax

love

Jan

I'm not sure I can help because I was so focused on not getting the flu that I didn't think about the surgery too much. I know some folks find better living through chemicals ;) . Since you've got the flu out of the way, maybe getting out and going to movies or anything to keep your mind on other things will help. I was so busy the day before tying up loose ends that I was even able to sleep a few hours the night before. Really, you will be amazed at how quickly after surgery you will feel better. Good luck and chin up - you'll make it and the 12th will be here before you know it. The surgery is pretty fresh in my mind, if you would like to pm or email me, please do.

Hi Val - I had my surgery on Jan 12, 2001. I also had the flu, but it was a few weeks after surgery. I think it is better to have it before. I know there is a lot of anxiety before the big day. Just stay as busy as possible. Good luck and I will keep you in my prayers.
