Went to see my surgeon yesterday (before i spent the night in hospital after having my four wisdom teeth out) and we have pencilled in the date of 16th November.

He feels that i should have both the aorta and the aortic valve replaced but at this point keep the root.....although when he gets in if the measurements don't look good i'll be going bentals.

Thats not exactly what i wanted to hear as i wanted to keep my own BAV initially but only over the last few days had thought of the continuing effect it would have on the size of my heart and was slowly comming around to mechanical.

Going to be going St jude for the valve, surgeon says on-x is good but still not as proven as st jude so although its up to me his recco was for st jude. If i was going to go mechanical i'd have chosen st jude anyway so that's no big change.

The surgeon fills me with confidence in his ability and his straight talking, he's got great bedside manner.

I am seeing another surgeon on the 1st of Nov just for a comparison but on my initial feelings for this second guy there is no doubt he's a good surgeon also but he didn't give me the warm calming feeling the first guy did.

one thing i've had said is always pick a busy surgeon rather than a queit one and when i asked the second guys receptionist what dates he had available for surgery in November he was completely free...

Anyway, off to suck on some jelly....

go with the busy guy for sure

go with the busy guy for sure

sounds like you are on your way and yes you absolutely want the guy that is super busy. Why would you want to keep the BAV?

Magic -

Glad you have got your surgery date organised and that you have confidence in your surgeon. Will be thinking of you on Nov. 16th - I am nearly in the same time zone as you which is a change!! Make sure you ask any questions you think of as you come up to your surgery - someone around here is bound to be able to help!!

Wisdom teeth extractions are NO FUN!! Please be sure to rinse with the salt as much as they tell you and watch for any sense of infection in there. Don't hesitate to call the oral surgeon with any questions. Poor you!!

I really like your attitude about surgeons. They are the "car mechanics" and you sure want your engine purring when this is all said and done! Your confidence is an enormous factor in all this. Good job!!

I've been coming to this site for 3 years now and have heard wonderful, wonderful things about St. Jude. It's a great valve.

Take care of yourself!

Well done Majic :) ...I just knew you would like John...I'm so happy for you...John certainly does fill you with confidence...the team he works with at the hospital are all wonderful too...

Now relax and eat ice-cream & jelly all week 'til your mouth is feeling better...

The BAV is in fairly good shape and initially the cardiologist said see you in 5 years until he saw the aorta above...my thinking was to keep the bav until it failed as long as it could theoretically last 10-15 like a pig valve and then have it swapped out with the best option at that time but a couple of days before the surgeon said it was best out i'd come to the same concusion as none of us really know if the bav is one of the symptoms of the group of problems us bav people have or one of the causes of the other problems.

I guess i'll just have to get used to the ticking and having a couple of glasses of expensive wine rather than a bucket of the cheap stuff.... :D I think the only thing i'll regret having to give up is the motorbike riding but then i'm only planning on giving it up until the kids are self sufficient and then will be back on the bugger in my late 40's....bikes rock, cars suck...;)

I have been doing research on valve selection myself. I came accross articles that said the St Jude valve had a recall in 2000? That is scary. Does anyone know more about this exactly?

Thanks
