Hello everyone:

The date has been set for Wayne's second surgery. January 24th. They will be doing a lot of testing prior to the main event. He is scheduled to have a tricuspid annuloplasty, IF the test results (64 slice) come back with clean arteries. And, IF, once he gets in there, the valve does not have rheumatic involvement, in which case he will replace the valve with a bioprosthetic, even though he has two mechanicals in place. (The reason is that these do better in the tricuspid position) His most recent echo also showed some mitral regurgitation, unquantified, which the 64 slice should be able to do. If not, he will have to have a heart cath, to determine if he has a paravalvular leak that has to be repaired when they are in there. Additionally, they need to verify that his coronary arteries remain clear.

Two or three days later, they will install the pacemaker. (He may also need an ICD, but time will tell on that.) If they have to implant a new valve, then the leads will be placed on the outside of the heart, when they are doing the surgery. If not, which always was our hope, the pacemaker will be implanted 3 days or so after the annuloplasty.

The really good news, is that they are going to try to get in from the side, and not crack his sturnam again.

I know you didn't want to find this in your future, but it is the answer for Wayne's problems, and will give him a better quality of life.

As always, in my thoughts and prayers.

Marybeth - I'm glad you found some answers and have a definite picture of what needs to be done. Will be thinking of you both as you make plans and preparations. I'm glad they will be able to go in from the side again. Jeanne

hi marybeth,
i have had the sense that you were not looking forward to this happening, but as nancy said, if this saves and helps wayne, there's nothing to talk about.
it seems many of the decisions we make here might not be our choice(s), but they save lives and so we must _by default_ choose them.

i try to remember always that these procedures and surgeries save our and our loved ones' lives. we are the lucky ones. i know several people/friends who have suddenly lost spouses to heart attacks, aneurysms, etc. no warning, no chance to "fix" it. we are the lucky ones; we've been given a second chance. this seems to make everything ok for me.

you are both in our thoughts and prayers. please keep us posted.
all the best, sylvia

Hi Marybeth. I'm glad you have something concrete to deal with now and something that seems like a good plan for Wayne. Was there any discussion about his Pulmonary pressures? I know you mentioned that his were elevated a while back. Anyway, I hope the two of you have a wonderful Christmas season and he keeps those coronary arteries clear and in good working order.

If they can avoid his sternum how great!

Hi Marybeth, glad that a plan is in action and they are going to go through the side instead of the sternum. We will be watching and waiting and sending our prayers and best wishes Wayne's way on the 24th.
