Hi. I am new here. =)

My husband is getting ready to have his aortic valve replaced with a carbomedic.

Does anyone know what the impact bodybuilding supplements such as creatine and multi-vitamins have on the impact of your INR??

Thank you.

Don?t know about the body building stuff but I take a multi-vitamin (with vit. K) every day. It has not effected my INR at all. The key is being consistent in your diet.

Angela:

The following site has a tremendous amount of information on anticoagultion management. It is the site of Dr. Al Lodwick, a member of this board who managed a large anticoagulation clinic for more than 10 years in Colorado.
He is currently traveling the country presenting anticoagulation management seminars to doctors and other medical professionals.

There are stickeys at the top of the Anticoagulation Forum here that might also help you with this question and many other ones about Coumadin. The seccond one is a film clip with a panel of experts who discuss anticoagulation management. It is about 1 hour long....there is a ton of information covered. I watched it twice and took notes the second time.

Hope this helps,
Blanche

If someone on Coumadin takes supplements or vitamins with K in them, the key is to be consistent. Don't be sporadic in taking them because your Coumadin dose reflects the effect that they have on your INR. If you take a supplement that affects the INR, then the dose of Coumadin will need to be adjusted based on the INR while on the supplement.

PTINC.com Site

PTINC.com Site

You may want to check out www.ptinr.com (linked from this site) which has lots of great info on anticoagulatants. Go to Drug Interactions for tons of info on various prescription drugs, OTC medications, Natural Medicines, and Food and Beverage. You can also click on Contact at the top of the page to send a more specific question for their review/consideration/response. They may already have info on creatine buried somewhere on their site or it may be something that they should add to the list. I take a number of vitamins/supplements/minerals/etc. each and every day and I echo the response of others regarding being consistent in the dosages.

Here's to good health!

You may want to also check to see if there is any SOYA in those body building supplements.

Its my understanding that soya and warfrin don't mix.

Someone will be along to clarify this, I'm sorry I don't know a real answer.
(This is where other members are helpful:) )

Soya and Coumadin

Soya and Coumadin

I consume a number of soy products in my daily diet http://www.soya.be/ and have not had issues with my PT/INR related to this. There is some comprehensive information on soy at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/natural/patient-soy.html You may want to note the section under Interactions that states:

Soy protein may interact with warfarin (Coumadin®), although this potential interaction is not well characterized. Patients taking warfarin should check with a doctor and pharmacist before taking soy supplementation.

You may want to check into the amount of soya/soy consumed as body building products have higher levels than that consumed in an 'average' diet.

The rule of thumb (except for specific products/medicines) is to be consistent in your intake, notify your monitoring clinic or physician of any changes that may affect our results, and have your coumadin adjusted accordingly.

Stay healthy and live long....

as a former bodybuilder, I would say stay away from Creatine. I haven't read anything, but from what others have told me it changes your mood etc. It also makes you retain water. I'd personally stay away.

After my 1st surgery in 2001 I continued to take creatine as part of my training schedule. It never ever effected my mood, although it does retain water and most likely result in weight gain.

Also for those with kidney/renal disorders, creatine supposedly causes renal stress because of more stress on the kidneys.

Something else you may want to consider Angela. Did they take a measurement of your husband's aortic root / ascending aorta?

BAVD and aortic aneurysms/dilatation are very closely linked. When I had my Aortic Valve replaced in '01 there was no mention of the fact that my Ascending Aorta was already 3.9cm (normal is 2.5 - 3.5). Although there were monitoring this in my echos, they failed to tell me. :(

Had I known about this, it may have impacted on the level of weight training that I did post surgery and in the subsequest years, as WT is not always a sensible activity for those of us with dilated aortas.
