Just thought I would share this. It does not put my mind at ease...and frankly, concerns me greatly for all of the valvers that experience such. I am down to just 2 a month now. From 3-4 a week. May have mentioned that I dropped the caffine.

Dec 14 (Reuters) - Migraine sufferers are twice as likely to have a stroke as people who do not have these debilitating headaches, Canadian and American scientists reported on Monday.

A review of 14 studies into the link between the headaches and stroke showed patients who have auras, or light effects, with their migraine are even more at risk.

"The results of our study strongly suggest that migraine may be an independent risk factor for stroke," Ali Samii, a neurologist at the University of Washington, said in a report published online by the British Medical Journal.

Three studies in the review indicated that women who have migraines and who take oral contraceptives were up to eight times more likely to have a stroke than those not taking the pill.

Samii and Mayhar Etminan, of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal and their colleagues who collaborated on the review, believe the raised risk is due to the reduced blood flow to the brain that occurs during a migraine.

Ischemic stroke, which usually caused by a blood clot that blocks a blood vessel in the brain, is the most common type of stroke.

Millions of people around the globe suffer from migraine, a severe throbbing headache that can cause nausea, vomiting, or a sensitivity to light, sound and odors. The cause is unknown.

The scientists called for more research into the link between migraine and stroke risk.

"The risk of migraine among users of oral contraceptives must be further investigated," they added.

One more reason this migraine sufferer is happy to be on coumadin.
Smiles, :)

Gina, I remember reading this article somewhere recently. It made me even more paranoid and stroke-obsessed than I already am. So many of us valvers suffer from aura and headache or just aura alone, so this is rather upsetting. I guess I would have to concur in that we can relax somewhat because we're on Coumadin, but still...

BTW, I haven't given up the caffeine completely, but I have banished aspartame from my diet and have been aura-free for a month.

Yikes!!! Just What I needed to here....

Yikes!!! Just What I needed to here....

This is really not a good thing....every so often with my PH and CHF, I also get a migrane or two.....I hope that this don't mean I am headed for a stroke...Harrybaby666

Up until 2 months ago I would have more than 3 a week. This has been going on for many years. Have had two complete work ups. CT scans have shown no evidence of a stroke. Don't know how much of what is printed we can take to heart

Thank you for posting this. I get frequent migraines (I use Frova), have MVP and I'm on the Pill due to endometriosis.

oh well....

oh well....

Thanks for the info. Yeh, that's a bummer if it proves true. But, I think we should try to avoid being very negative about the news. After all, many people's lives have improved since they discovered warning signs for  heart disease  , haven't they? All we migraine/aura professionals need to do is pay close attention to all the other news about stroke prevention and continue to lead informed, healthy lives. I suspect that STRESS is a huge factor, so let's not get stressed out about it.

Thanks for sharing. Knowledge is power.

oh, and

oh, and

Sherry,
I'm so glad that quitting aspartame has worked for you. That and MSG are true triggers for me, like lighting up a firecracker!
