Hi. I'm curious if anyone else has experienced the following:

I am about 18 months post-op for my aortic valve replacement. I have a St. Jude Mechancial and am off all meds except coumadin.

Overall I feel well, however I have noticed occassionaly, a funny "flutter" or "spasm" like feeling in my upper chest/lower throat area. There is no pain and my heart does not skip during this feeling. The best way I can describe it is it feels like a throat spasm.

I'm not sure if this is feeling is coming from my aorta, throat or something else. I also notice them at times of higher stress (work issues, exercise, etc.). Again, no pain, just a funny little feeling.

The good news is that I don't experience them as often as I did the months after surgery. Could they be the result of the breathing tube and my body is slowly healing from it or could it be aorta/heart related?

Any ideas? Thanks!

could be

could be

I feel my chest kind of 'jump' it was very bad right after ohs..then they put me on atenenol, it dosent happen as often now. Tell your dr, it could really be anything. Love Yaps

Mine did that following my first surgery. I told the Cardio about it and he had a catscan done to rule out anything being wrong. It stopped doing it on it's own a few months later, but I know how aggravating it is.

I also had that happen with my thoat. They discussed the fact that it could be from the breathing tubes. I used to feel lots of things that have went away or slackened with time. Still have a couple I just have to deal with. It seems like the throat spasms and funny feelings is a common denominator among many of us.

Thanks. I explained the feeling to my cardio at my last appointment and he said each body reacts differently to surgery. He also said valve replacement is one of the most invasive surgery a person can have so everyone is different as to how they respond afterwards.

He also said since I had a regurgitating bicuspid valve, my new valve is now pumping all the blood out into the aorta which my be causing the slight tickle feeling. He didn't seem to be too concerned as I had no pain, light headedness, shortness of breath or dizziness.

Did anyone mention ( and i don't mean to raise any alarm here as i'm sure this isnt the case) the possibility of A-Fib (Atrial Fibrilation). The only reason i mention it is because my grandfather had bypass surgery about a year ago. Now, i know this is completely different than an aortic valve replace. (i have AI myself and am going to have to have the surgery also), but the thing that jumped out at me in your description is the term "fluttering" you used. he used the same exact term, "fluttering" that he had felt post-op and it turned out ot be A-Fib. He also said that he could feel it in the side area of his neck which you also mentioned.

just wanted to share what sounded like a very similair description of what my gramps went through. he is now on medication to control the A-Fib because, as i understand it could be very serious.

again, im sure you have nothing to worry about. you spoke with you cardio and it wasnt brought up and im sure if that was a concern with your particular case he would of immediately thought of that. just wanted to mention.

J.
