Last night I talked to a friend in Albuquerque NM. Wylie told me a couple of years ago about his mom, who had a St. Jude valve.
I called him to get an update on his mom.
He said she was 73 when she had VR (don't know which valve) and chose a mechanical because she didn't want a repeat surgery.
That was 15 years ago. She's 88 now.
He said the only problems she's had are due to the idiot (he hinted at this) anticoagulation managers who change her dose, then insist on another INR test 2 days later. He took the words right out of my mouth: "You can't do that because the results don't show for 72+ hours."
Wylie is a retired professor of optometry; his wife was a researcher at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis TN. So they both have some medical background.
I didn't ask if his mom is in a care facility or lives with them or by herself.
But I thought that was pretty good -- 88 and still ticking away!!!!!!!
