How long after your surgery did your sternum stop hurting?

I am 4 weeks post-op today and my sternum still hurts about 2/5. At most I take tylenol or motrin. I am just worried that the sternum is not healing properly. I also feeling a little bit of clicking in my sternum when I move. The docs are a plane ride away from me.

I don't know about the clicking, but the fact that it still hurts after 4 weeks is normal. For me it took 6 months for soreness to totally go away.

Mine is still very definitely sore and I was 4 weeks yesterday. I was told some clicking is normal depending on how tightly they wired the sternum together. I don't have any clicking but asked the question because I was curious after hearing the question here.

Totally normal, as others have said. Have heard of some having the clicking, although didn't have that myself. In Aug. will be 3 years for me and my sternum still gets sore when I work out extra hard; my cardio said if it still does as this point then it always will. But, 4 weeks post op, I'd say you still have a little ways to go.

I'm sure it's just normal healing, but clicking is something they told me to watch out for. I think it's worth a call to them (since they're a plane ride away) and make sure they're aware of it. You didn't lift anything you shouldn't or stretch it too far or anything did you?

Sternum Pain & Clicking

Sternum Pain & Clicking

Even though I was on a fast track with recovery and rehab, I had sternum pain and a few clicking episodes. The first time I took my old mountain bike (no suspension) out for a ride I thought my sternum was going to come apart.

I don't think I did anything that I was not suppose to do. The incision looks great. No redness, swelling or drainage.

I just wanted to make sure a little bit of pain was normal since the last time that I had surgery I did not need to take even motrin after discharge.

I am 17 weeks post op and have the same pains and clicks in the sternum, I mentioned it to the doctor on check up and he says it is normal and the sternum is not coming apart which was my worry. I don't get much pain now but now and then it reminds me; especially if I lean forward or lay very flat. I know it is getting better and also that it will take some time as will all the other aches and pains.

I am at just under 6 months and still get a little pain every once in a while on days after I lift a lot. I get the clicking too this time. They call it normal but, THEY don't click.

I think you are ok.
