My friend just told me that her husband who had a stent put in 10/07 (first one and only heart issue) is back in the hospital not feeling well. The Dr. told her if a stent was going to have a problem it usually occurs in the first 6 months. Has anyone ever heard of this ?

Without doing any web research, I do know that there has been information within the last year about stents not being as good as they thought for some reason. Sorry for the vagueness, but I know personally of one person who's doctor did not want to do a stent procedure recently due to new information.

I assume he had a drug coated stent. I have heard the first six month statement to. Mine closed after 18 months so I don't think one can use it as a tried and true statement it can happen anytime from day one on.

Stents can close at any time but I have heard that there is risk of them closing around the six month time frame. That is one of the reasons patients take plavix/aspirin for at least a year after having a stent placed. Some cardios insist on lifetime plavix after a coated stent.

My husband had a stent and he was given the manufacturer's paperwork and also the cardiologist told us that there is no statistics to say that a stent will last over six months. Some maybe not that long. They have had some last almost 30 years but the statistics are so varied that it is just anyone's guess. The majority of the statistics are for at least six months but not enough to claim that. And if something doesn't happen the first six months doesn't mean it won't happen later. Just do what they tell you and be as prepared as one can until it shows some reversal or forever if necessary.
My husband has had his three years. I pray that it will last.

And what is the recommendation for a patient with a Mechanical Heart Valve who is taking Coumadin / Warfarin AND has a stent (medicated or not) ???
