Staying the Course -- February 2, 2021

Greetings fellow Coursers!

So the groundhog saw its shadow so we're supposed to have six more weeks of winter. Humbug! What does some sheltered rodent know about meteorology? Studies have shown that the pampered rodent's forecast is right 50% of all Groundhog Days -- so no better than a coin flip.

The Super Bowl comes up this Sunday, of course. In our household it is a big occasion and we spend a lot of Saturday preparing our Big Mama Super Bowl chili and then a lot of Sunday eating it. Plenty of munchies on the side. Kids and grandkids welcome to join but not sure how many will this time around. Favorites: Big Ma likes young Mahomes (and so the Chiefs) and I'm going with Tom Brady and the Bucs because, well, old guys rule. My prediction Tampa Bay 34, Kansas City 31.

We've have had a good bit of rain and cold winds, but we have soldiered on with the dawgwalking anyway. Obviously, we got off easy compared to farther up the Atlantic coast where some places inland got 1 to 3 feet of snow. Maybe some of our Coursers have reports and pix.

I have pushed all our doctors' appointments to March so as to leave room for our two vaccination visits. Our second Pfizer inoculation is just two weeks away. Would like to lie low for 2 or 3 weeks afterward to allow it to take effect to the extent possible.

Hi Superbob and everyone ! I had my Covid vaccination on Saturday morning just gone ! It was at my local GP surgery as they are a vaccination hub for a network of six local GP surgeries. It was all very well organised with marshalls directing cars and escorting people to the correct part of the building. My appointment was for 8.40 and the *** was done at 8.45, all very efficient. I got the Pfizer vaccine but I don't know when the second dose will be because here in the UK they are delaying the second dose for up to 12 weeks so that more peope can get the first dose and some partial immunity (I'm not sure of the wisdom of that). The only side effect I got from the vaccination was a mildly sore arm near the injection site for about 12 hours

We just moved our DS to a new flat at the weekend which is not far from the previous one. It was such a lot of work for me and DH - I certainly got a lot of good exercise !

I am assuming you are referring to the signing of the best third baseman in all of baseball, Nolan Arenado. Or is there another signing, too? Yes, as a lifelong Redbirds' fan, I am super-excited about this season, too. I was kind of hoping they could still re-sign second-baseman Kolten Wong, too, then the whole infield would be Gold Glovers. But versatile Tommy Edman no doubt can play a good 2B, too. Arenado is great not just because he adds the hitting they needed to add to their lineup but because of his spectacular fielding. He is up there with the all-time greats like Brooks Robinson and Mike Schmidt. Enjoy!

They are very particular here about the second Pfizer vaccine needing to come exactly three weeks after the first one. Our vaccination card has us scheduled for Dose 2 at three weeks later right on the same hour as the first. I don't know if there is magic in such precision. Hope all goes well with the delayed schedule in the UK. Must be a result of the vaccine supply not yet meeting demand. I wonder if our follow-up doses are guaranteed, or could be tapped into. Lots of uncertainty these days. My wife had strong pain in injection site until it dissipated the next morning. I felt no pain. I have read that the second dose usually brings stronger side-effects, such as chills and perhaps even a low-grade fever, but those are supposed to indicate the vaccine is working as intended.

But now the Lions will have Goff as their QB instead of Matt Stafford...oh wait! I extend my sympathy! As a fan of The Washington Football Team, I am hoping the former 'Skins can land Deshaun Watson as their new QB. Then all my off-season wishes will be fulfilled.

Happy to hear you folks are being vaccinated! As for six more winters of winter, well that's a given in Minnesota. In fact, that would be an early spring!! Groundhog Day is kind of a bust here. Dude won't even come out of his hole till mid April.
