" A cholesterol-lowering statin drug can significantly cut the risk of potentially fatal blood clots, US research suggests. In trials rosuvastatin..........."

"...Dr Ridker added that statin therapy carried no risk of excess bleeding - a side effect associated with alternative blood-thinning treatments such as warfarin."

and another article..

and another article..

"The 17,802 participants, recruited from 1,300 clinical sites in 26 countries, were randomly assigned to 20 milligrams (mg) of rosuvastatin a day or a daily placebo. The study’s independent data and safety monitoring board ended the trial in March 2008, more than two years ahead of schedule, when it determined that the study data indicated “unequivocal benefit of rosuvastatin” on coronary-related death and disability.

“Not only do we confirm that apparently healthy men and women with elevated hsCRP are at high risk of cardiovascular events, but we demonstrate that a simple therapy can reduce their risk of heart attack, stroke or cardiovascular death,” Ridker said."

Now, we just need to know if our "hsCRP" is elevated - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-reactive_protein

I just finished 3 months on 20mg Simvastatin and my total cholesterol went down 106 points..!! My doc couldn't believe it.. So far, no side effects.

Wonder if there are any trials on using statins instead of warfarin in mechanical valvers?

My guess is not at this time, since warfarin is much cheaper than statins. I looked but don't think I saw any generic statins on Wal-Mart's $4 Rx list.

Statins work differently than warfarin. But it is something to think about.
