My dad got me and my brother stargazing when we were kids. He'd come up with a telescope from the college (he's a professor) and we'd set it up on the hood of the car in our driveway. There were a lot of "city lights" all over and such but we still got decent views of many things. During the winter you can often see the Northern Lights on a clear night. It's usually pretty late, but it's there and we're in New York State...
We've also gotten good looks at comets (I got to see one BOTH in new York and then in Florida when I went along with the high school baseball team for a training camp thing during Easter break) and all kinds of other stellar events.
Even tried looking for ISS once but I gather it's pretty low near the horizon.
I didn't shoot the photo of last night's eclipse, it was nother photographer here at the paper. He used a Nikon D2A which is one of the newer models of their line of high end digital SLR cameras and a 200mm zoom. I don't recall if he had a tripod or not.
The camera's got a really good pixel resolution and what you see above is just the center part of the picture frame, cropped and resized and with some other touch-up work that we do in Adobe Photoshop.
I had to run around shooting local houses for the weekend. We run a full page "photo package" featuring houses that have been decorated for Halloween. Also run one for Christmas.
I think we also do Easter now which I find a little ridiculous. Any excuse to decorate your house for a week or so...
