Hello there and I'm one step closer (I pray) to finding out why I'm still spitting blood and have horrible nausea for 6+weeks now. I Went to the cardio for that and other things and no answers.(Heart is okay though and thats awesome). Next I was in the E.R. AGAIN for spitting blood and nausea and of course that was diagnosed as panic attacks as some of you know. Yesterday I went to the Dentist to have them rule out any gum and or mouth bleeding just to get that one ruled out. So far so good. Today was the gastrointestinal doctor and now Tues. Feb 20th I shall have the scope down to the belly (EGD) ICK ICK!!!k:eek:    Bleeding ulcer? Lack of love? Who's to say but I'm still waiting to find out and just hope and pray everything's okay. The Doctor thinks maybe there's something going on (of course) but maybe the coumadin is making things a bit worse. We shall see. Until then..... I will rip off all clothes and dance like its 1999.:D THANK GOD THIS DOCTOR BELIEVES ME!

I'll be thinking of you. Just an FYI - the 20th is a Monday. I would hate for you to miss the test having the day/date wrong.

Hope they figure out what is going on.

The Endo is so very very easy. Had bleeding ulcers a year ago. Make sure they are careful with your coumadin ahead of time and make sure you talk to them about antibiotic premeds. Mine was done in the hospital since I was bleeding internally and had a hemoglobin of 7 when I got there so we just IV'd the antibiotic and held the coumadin the night before so it would be just right. They will give you drugs to make you not give a darn what they are doing. Good luck on your quest.

Good Luck!!!!

Good Luck!!!!

Hi Ya,

I am wishing all the best.... the ole scope down the throat ain't to bad:eek:
I have had it twice... one little shot and the next thing you want to know is when are they going to get started:) . They can really find out a lot of stuff with this little look. I will most likely be in surgery when they are looking in your tummy. Eat a cheeseburger before you go.

There is little doubt that you will need an upper GI endoscopy with a 6 week history of ?spitting? blood. However, your description is less than adequate. Do you have any hoarseness or change in voice associated with your symptoms? Are you vomiting up blood with stomach contents even if liquid, or are you spitting up teaspoon-tablespoon quantities with surrounding saliva? Do you notice that blood or fluid seems to well up in the back of your throat and then you spit it out, or does a large amount suddenly seem to regurgitate into your mouth associated with prior nausea? The nausea could be because this is a primary stomach problem. Or because simply having blood in the mouth makes many patients nauseated.

The distinction is important because your problem could be as simple as bleeding from a dilated vein at the base of the tongue (Hemorrhoids of the oral cavity) or dilated vessels elsewhere in the hypopharynx. Being on Coumadin would allow this area to bleed more easily, where in a non-anticoagulated patient they might never notice any blood since it is easily swallowed rather than welling up in the throat.

Again the site of bleeding is important and the GI endoscopist will very likely miss seeing anything in your mouth or hypopharynx because the large tube used, does not focus closely as it goes down. At a minimum, ask the endoscopist to take as close a look as possible at your tongue and larynx on the way down (a suggestion from an ENT doctor).

Hayley-

Joe recently had an upper GI bleed. He actually had two endoscopies and a colonoscopy. His started out with nausea and diarrhea and occult blood in his stool. He didn't spit up blood, but could have, easily.

The source of his bleeding was varices in his esophagus and stomach from years of high portal pressure from his pulmonary hypertension and years of congestive liver from his congestive heart failure. There was also inflammation of his stomach. The varices were only stage 1, possibly heading towards 2, but nevertheless, they had been bleeding. There was a small polyp in the stomach too.

Being on Coumadin just didn't allow them to coagulate enough to stop bleeding.

He ended up in the hospital a couple of times to get things under control. They did lower his Coumadin level to ward off any more bleeding, and he is now on a double dose of Prevacid.

So far, he has had to have about 8 transfusions.

I am glad your doctor is checking things out. It's nothing to fool around with.

Well it's getting better and better for me as I went to my pcp following the gastro Doctor and She said she would manage my coumadin from now on. WOOOO HOOOOO!!! I'm so happy as I would feel so much more comfortable with my Doctor whom I've been so blessed to have for 6 or so years managing my "Spice of Life" dosages. Thank you to all (especially Allodwick) who helped in connecting me to other sources of coumadin management. This seems to be what is going to work best for me. There is no charge for her to manage and dose me (no insurance remember:eek: ) and she didn't charge me for yesterdays visit. Im so grateful....and yes I sent her the most gorgeous purple flowers and she will get them today. See I dont ALWAYS complain....just most the time;) Thanks to all who have posted also as without you I would be insane. Okay I would be TOTALY insane:D
