Well... spinach has been off the shelves now for almost a week. Subway even pulled it off the vegetable line. I eat at Subway for lunch about 4-5 days per week and I always have spinach on my sandwich. Anyone else concerned about their INR creeping up because of spinach withdrawal?

I'm not scheduled to go back to the clinic for an INR for another 3 weeks. Fortunately I can home test now and I will probably test this weekend. I would be interested in hearing if the spinach problem has had an impact on anyone INR. Any of you fresh-spinach-eaters gotten an INR this week?

Thanks for considering this!

Regards,

Spinach on a sandwich 4-5 days a week and then not having it won't have as much of an impact on the INR as it would if you were having a big spinach salad 4-5 days a week.

You probably should go in for a test in another week just to make sure you aren't getting to high. I would hesitate to make any adjustments to your dose for anything less than 5. Spinach should return soon, you'll get back into eating it and things will get back to normal (if they ever even get abnormal!).

Jimmy:

If you're worried about spinach withdrawal, go to Cracker Barrel & have a bowl of turnip greens. :D I know there's a Cracker Barrel -- maybe even a Black-Eyed Pea -- in the Tyler area.

Seriously, I had put spinach on my shopping list when this came up. Don't buy it all the time, though. I was going to make an Italian soup & put spinach in it. Changed my menu plans.

Does Subway have another very dark green lettuce you can request?

Thanks, y'all.

Marsha, you're right about the Cracker Barrel. It's up next to I-20. The Black-Eyed Pea closed about 5-6 years ago and none of the restaurants that have tried that building have been able to make it. It's vacant right now. Sounds like you have spent some time in the Tyler area.

I'll have to pass on the turnip greens.;) That was a favorite dish of my grandmother and my dad, but I never did develop a taste for it.

The darkest green vegetable that Subway has right now is JALAPENO's.  .... but I actually like a few jalapenos on my sandwich. :)

Regards,

It would be interesting to see what happens to people's INRs during the time the spinich was not available. Would people please post?

Spinach lovers take notice!!!

Just heard on the news that spinach will be back on the market between 3-5 days......just gorge and pig out so that inr will come back down.....just kidding.....

The spinich growers in Colorado are on the news saying that their product has not been involved.

My son, who hates vegetables of any sort, says that in his 39 years he has never heard of anyone dying from not eating spinich.

Two weeks ago my INR was 2.8 on the clinic's Coagucheck S and 2.8 on my INRatio. (I was pleasantly surprised at the exact match!)

After a week with no spinach on my Subway sandwiches, I checked my INR this morning and the result was...... 2.1 !  ... out of range, but opposite from the direction I was expecting.

I am currently on 7.5mg daily, so I took 10 today & will report the results to the clinic tomorrow for further instructions.

As a disclaimer, my INR has been a little erratic during my 3 months on Coumadin, especially early in the therapy. It has been getting better lately, but we definitely have not gotten to the point of calling it "stable".

The word "Stable" has different meanings for different people. I'm stable on 45mg per week, but I sometimes go above 3.5 even on that dose. I consider stable to be, the dose that allows you to be in range the most. INR=It's Never Right.

Stability with warfarin seems to be relative.

I tell people that they are "less unstable" instead of stable.
