Time to start thinking about it. They mention some sort of new nasal inhaler...it has a small amount of the live virus. Would stay clear of that.

If you may recall, few years back they used the live vaccine for the first time and the ER's/hospitals were overflowing and closing down. Was one of many myself. 103.5 - 104 sick as a dog. Not a great way to spend your Christmas holiday.

I was reading about the nasal stuff. We people definately need to stay away from the live virus form of the vaccine and that's exactly what the nasal is. We need the SHOTS people. That contains the dead virus.

The 2003--2004 trivalent inactivated vaccine virus strains are A/Moscow/10/99 (H3N2)-like, A/New Caledonia/20/99 (H1N1)-like, and B/Hong Kong/330/2001-like antigens (for the A/Moscow/10/99 [H3N2]-like antigen, manufacturers will use the antigenically equivalent A/Panama/2007/99 [H3N2] virus, and for the B/Hong Kong/330/2001-like antigen, manufacturers will use either B/Hong Kong/330/2001 or the antigenically equivalent B/Hong Kong/1434/2002).

I agree. Had the flu twice that year. Second time it almost killed me. Why would they use the live virus? It was not immediate. 6 weeks after my injection.

Seeing my GP next week for a check up and flu vaccine. Anyone know how long the pneumonia vaccine lasts? Wonder if I need another. Been four years.

Thanks

flu shot

I am new to all of this but I will discuss the flu shot with the Dr. Didn't have one last year but this year I have the new valve. I am assuming that your Docs recommended that you have one. I see mine on the 10th of October. I sure do get a lot of good information from this site, Thanks,

Flu shots! Yeah!
I always get mine. My husband never had one until 3 years ago, but I have "guilted" him into it. He is a big cry-baby about shots and needles.

After valve replacement a flu shot is nothing!

Gina, did the pneumonia vaccine make you sick, too?
I might look into getting one since I had bronchitis in June for the first time in my life.

Here ya go Gina:

Check with your Doctor. I had another one last year because I'm extremely high risk and haven't had a revaccination in over 10 years. My Doc said it probably wasn't necessary, but he wasn't taking any chances.

"The Dope On Pneumonia Vaccines"

Routine revaccination is not recommended except under certain circumstances. Revaccination is recommended for children and adults at highest risk for fatal infection and for those shown to have had a rapid decline in pneumococcal antibody levels (such as: patients with nephrotic syndrome, renal failure or transplant recipients). Ask your physician if revaccination is appropriate for you.

Gina:
Al's doctor recommends the pneumonia shot be repeated every six years for those who are at risk, which would include heart valve people.

hi all!
gina, thanks for that info. joey usually has his flu shot in the form of a shot, but_being needle phobic_ i wasw going to recommend the nasal spray thing.... now i won't!
our doctor usually likes to see new meds and vaccines out for awhile before recommending them to us anyway.
wonder how he'll feel about this one!!!
thank you so much; i would not have known that it was a live virus they were giving in this spray.
be well, sylvia

Mara!

See you have one of those guys in your house too!

My hubby was shivering under the sheet in the ER when he went in for his Kidney issues. Never witnessed anything like it. Poor guy. After his ordeal....he's surely was/is very over it! Would love for him to take the flu shot this year.

On the pneumonia vaccine. Was perfectly fine with it. I think the issue with the flu shot was that it was the first time they released the live virus. NOt a good thing. Alot of individuals were very very sick that year.

who should get the shot?

who should get the shot?

Could anyone tell me who needs to get the flu vaccine?? Is it something I should talk to my doctor about? I have Aortic and mitral valve disease w/AI and AS and Mitral mild regurg. and Tachycardia.

Erica you are definately a great candidate to get the flu vaccine. Be sure to ask your Doctor. Mean time, here is a .PDF file you can download and view with Adobe Acrobat Reader that explains all about it.
