Cold hard facts after surgeon consult today πŸ˜•
Left me speachless and quite frankly shocked. Must say not what l expected to hear. So much to obsorb and need time for it all to sink in.
I will post and update more detail. Tomorrow as l am totally exhausted and a little bit shocked.
Not to mention l drove for 6 plus hours round trip. And a bit stressed at the moment. πŸ˜• eeekk
Sigh
Thank you to those who inbox me with concerns and that were thinking of me today.
Xx 😘 ❀
Harriet

I really appreciate your thoughts. I did see the surgeon today and just got home 3 hr drive there and 3 hours home. Needless to say l am exhausted. So much to process. So much info and of course the facts.
In a nutshell right now l am a little high risk and he has asked some things of me.
1 - l must attend respiratory therapy prior /pre surgery. He is concerned with getting me off of the heart /lung machine and breathing again.
2 - He is concerned with the rate of recovery due to my Lung disease and anticipates a length and possibly a tough recovery.
3 - He generally tells his patients there is a 1-3% risk rate. He is telling me right off the top 8-12% risk plus increase of 25 % because of my Lung and breathing issues. That puts me at about 35% risk ! That getting pretty darn high.

Those percentages are without any complications and could increase dramatically with the slightest unknown or unexpected complication both during and after surgery. And high risk for infection.

He wants me first to see the nose throat and ear specialist as sceduled for Oct 6 because of a cronic nose bleed of 4 yrs even though after all that time has stopped now for 2 mths.
I am also waiting to see the neurologist for an 80% blockage. But luckily it is not in the arteries in my heart but nevertheless is an issue and was discovered during my heart Cath in May. They are trying to get me in ASAP for a Stent.

As a surgeon has an amazing success rate and comes very highly recommend. He is very matter of fact with a dry sence of humor.

He said next time l see him we would both be in our pajamas but it wouldn't be for a few mths.l asked potentially tge first of next year.
And he said possibly depends how l make out on respiratory therapy pre surgery. But possibly before the end of the year.

He would use both or 2 mechanical valves and the brand would be I irrelevant. He would use what on the shelf. And he would never ever use 2 OnX when replacing 2 vales as in my case.
He mentioned he could get rid of some of my symptoms but not all that some were directly lung related.

He also told me my med list would double or triple from what it is now and for life and l would have the pleasure of being the recipient of Rat Poison πŸ˜•( coumadin ) from that point forward. I gasped at that . I had know idea. Sigh !!

He also told me l had to meet and consult with the rest of his team at the pre surgery valve clinic prior to as they also evaluate and assess me pre surgery. This would include his therapists this anothesiologist and the rest of his nursing staff and lab. They worked as a team and expectations of them were high and that is how he operates.

All in all it was a really a tough consultation and some hard facts.
Left me speachless and a bit irratated.
That is my reality. Lots to soak in and lots to pray about.

One last time bit ..
I asked about being able to hear the ticking of the valves and expressed my concerns about whether they would be insinc or not. Hahaha hahahaha wrong question. Lol
He responded with "well you let me know when they stop ticking." πŸ˜•
Don't let the noise bother you.😐

It was great that my son and daughter in law whom live in Calgary were able to be there with me.
He also handed me a procedure book with release forms and instructions on recovery. .
So l have some work ahead of me. Alot of respiratory therapy. . It's all good !
It will be a few mths then be for surgery looks like as late as Dec possible into January.

Thank you for your message and thoughts.
Without surgery l may have a few years with declining quality of life. I am a little more understanding of yesterday now that is all sinking in.
I have a sometime to try and get healthier pre surgery. In fact it's going to be a game changer.
Even though my days a tough and continue to shorten l am in alot better shape than many here.
My prayers are with you and Things are going to go great for you.
Much love to you.Xx

As tough as it is to hear it is probably good to have a Dr. that tells you like it is, and good that he is focused on getting you in the best shape possible prior to surgery. Certainly I think that recovery from surgery is often related to one's health prior to surgery, so improving your health may improve your odds. I wouldn't worry too much about things like the ticking of the valves or being on warfarin. Lots of people on this forum deal with those daily and say it isn't a big deal. Good luck to you.

A-Z Don
Thank you and yes your right about better lung function increasing my odds. I really do want the best possible outcome. I'm not to concerned about the meds etc. Just the way he put it. But even that l am okay with today .
Thx Don

Odds are a funny thing because it's easy to only look at them one way when in fact you often ought to look at them another way. I'm young and healthy and even though my open heart surgery was a major procedure it had very little risk. Although my risk of having gone without or even delaying my surgery were drastically against me. My surgeon literally said prior to surgery I "was a walking time bomb" because of my aortic anyeurism.

All you can do is stay strong, keep a positive attitude and outlook! Be the best possible patient you can be :)

Well Harriet, you and I may be going through this at the same time of year (Dec. or Jan). It is nice to have a support person, even if only in the virtual world!
I have a history of reacting negatively to physicians who act the way yours did. Once, one of my kids saw an oral surgeon who was quite dismissive and treated me like an *****. It wasn't pretty. I don't really remember what I said to him (blinding Mom rage will do that to me) but I know he had an unusual look on his face when I was done speaking with him. My husband tries to remind me that when it comes to surgery, you want the best person for the job, not necessarily the one with the best social skills. I am glad you are coming to a place of acceptance about the info you heard. He sounds like a !@#$% to me but like my husband says, if he is really good at the surgery, that is his purpose.

Please let us know how your pre-surgery treatment develops,

Amy

Thank you almost_hectic and AmyBL ☺
I knew walking in to the appointment yesterday that this is a very brilliant man and his bedside manner is not his best side. I am ok with that because his real talent is saving lives. He has done literally thousands of OHS and is known for his brilliant gift of trickery cases and his list of saved lives is very very long. That's the kind of surgeon l prayed for. He was hand picked for me and l am grateful he want and is pushing me to be in a better breathing capacity going in. He knows what it takes to survive as does his team and they want the best possible odds going in. They don't want to fail.
I'm blessed! !
I had a conversation with his assistant this afternoon and it went like this . Dr M had already dictated his letter and forwarded and copied all my doctor's with his report assessment recommendations and what he expects of me.
I have been scheduled for my pre surgery valve clinic or pre administration clinic. Dec 8th 2015 That gives me 2 mths to get my sh#t together. And to go through respiratory therapy.
At that time they will finish assessment with anesthesiologist and rehab therapist and pre blood work etc. If they are satisfied with my progress at that time l could have surgery over Christmas or first of January. If my assessment is not up to his expectations l will have reassessment in Jan.
I can do this thing and be ready l am mentally and emotionally and spiritually ready now. As long as l can keep that mindset l will be ready physically.

You're not alone Harriet. btw, I once had a conversation with someone who had two mechanical valves. He told me his were in sync. He's doing great. Your surgeon sounds very skilled, but is probably no expert on your lung condition. I've met doctors who make their bluntness a point of honour. But like you said as long as he can operate it doesn't really matter if he's a tool.

harrietW, keep calm!
Probably your surgeon was talking about worst case scenario, just to cover himself. Dont overthink too much about those statistics. After all, every person is unique. You are doing all the right things. You will be ok!

Hi Harriet - are you under a respiratory specialist ? Surely he and the cardiac surgeon should be communicating with each other. My respiratory specialist sent a report to my cardiac surgeon saying how he felt I would do under aneasthetic, he did several tests beforehand to check.

Paleogirl Oh yes of course l am and have been under the care of A lung specialist for a couple of years. I have interstitial lung disease. And l am on alot of medication just for that alone. I sleep with a CPAP and go for regular lung function test as late as last week. I see my Lung doctor every couple of months and on the 13 of Oct. All of my Doctors are in constant contact with each other. The surgeon sent and copied a letter to all of my 5 doctors just yesterday. I called to my Lung doctors office this morning to ask them to get me into pre surgery respiratory therapy ASAP. I haven't heard back yet.

Harriet, I am so impressed with your courage and determination. It really seems like you have top notch physicians providing care and now you have a tentative date. In the grand scheme of things, we are fortunate to have conditions that are treatable. Take care.

I couldn't agree more AmyBL! Isn't that so true. Gosh my dad passed away in 1973 of a massive heart attack at the age of 47 just 2 days before he was scheduled for OHS. He had a long history of angina and was terrified, my mom was 37 with 5 children. l feel incredibly blessed to have 5 Brilliant Doctors. Who care about whether l am strong enough to handle surgery and have been just so amazing. I have no doubt that I will come thru this and l am over any fear that l did have. I have grand children to meet and a life to live. We are all very blessed to live in a time where surgeons have such amazing track records and OHS is a so much more common and values can be chosen by brand or like my Surgeon says " whatever's on his shelf " Just so Damn grateful.
Looks like we might be having Christmas dinner on bedside on a hospital trolley πŸ˜‰ and l am ok with that.
Xx

Glad your lung speciliast and all the others are in the loop !

Harriet, you have come a long way. I remeber you came on this scene just as I was preparing for my surgery and although I am not the best cheerleader in good times, it was all I could do at that point to keep myself moving along, so I don't think I ever reached out to you. I am so happy you have come to this point in your mental and spiritual journey. It will be so beneficial being so positive and making sure you're a good patient while you let the professionals take care of their parts.

Best wishes for productive preparations and a succesful surgery.

Your surgeon is telling it like it is...that's a good thing. From my experience, it can quickly escalate into a serious situation when the severity of the situation is not recognized.
