Lisa in Katy

Night before last I woke up in the middle of the night with a sore throat. I got water and went back to sleep, but when I woke up, it was still sore. I tried to make an appointment, but my PCP is in a part of town that still doesn't have power. Ditto for my Cardiologist. My daughter is getting over a cold so I figured that's what it was, even though my only symptoms were the sore throat and fatigue. It wasn't unbearable, so I decided that waiting a day wouldn't hurt, especially since I didn't want to see a strange doctor and we're still quite limited as to open businesses. Today I woke up with a stuffy/runny nose (never figured out how you can have both at the same time), cough, and sneezing. Sure enough, a cold, not strep. Now I just "look forward" to feeling crummy for the next 10 days.

Lisa,
My wife and I have the same kind of thing up here.
But for you guys down there, you already have enough problems.
Hope you get feeling better.

get some zicam - also zinc lozenges. maybe you can get them at any store that might be open. Don't need colds when you can't get there - to dr. best wishes.

Lisa, I had the same syptoms of sore throad and fatigue two days ago. I phoned to three doctors and received three different replies....."take antibiotics"......."visit a throad specialist".......and "bacteria are not the only factors that can cause a sore throad. Wait another few days and watch out for fever. Avoid taking antibiotics at this stage". I followed the advise of the third doctor. Afterall, he was the one who saved my life last year.
Now I feel fine. I took vitamin C, Strepsils and Betatine throad spray.
I am scared of such symptoms because all of my troubles of last year started with sore throad and fatigue. It then resulted into Endocarditis, septic shock and AVR.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Lisa:

It's probably related to what Ike has kicked up in the air.

BTW, my cousin in Spring had to get her son to the doctor yesterday. He was hospitalized right after school started when an undetected sinus infection caused his face to swell. It started to swell again over the weekend and Donna finally reached his doctor yesterday. Nothing showed on X-rays but the doctor wrote an Rx for antibiotics as "insurance" (Josh has MVP + polycystic kidney disease).

Donna used nearly 1/2 tank of gas trying to find a pharmacy that (1) was open and (2) that could fill the Rx.
She said that many stations where she lives are not open because of (1) no fuel or (2) no power, and the ones that are have extremely lengthy lines.

I'm back at work today and there are a lot of people coughing and others who are complaining of sore throats, so it is probably something caused by the hurricane, humidity, and no electricity for variable periods of time.

I think Spring is in the area covered by the electric company that still has about 90% of their customers without power. I know The Woodlands just got power late last night and areas farther north are still without.

Anyway, I'm sure this isn't strep. The sore throat is gone and I'm left with sinus crap, so I will recover. I will look for Zinc. So far I'm depending on DayQuil and NyQuil, and my husband bought the liquid stuff (GAG!).

I feel for ya. I know when Lyn goes in and people are sick, I'm sure to get whatever the local thing is once she comes home. Never fails. The zinc and zicam works if you want to be rid of it a little faster.

The google search I did said that people on Warfarin should avoid Zinc, but it was marked with an asterisk, which means, "An asterisk (*) next to an item in the summary indicates that the interaction is supported only by weak, fragmentary, and/or contradictory scientific evidence."

So, who knows? I'm due for an INR check next week, so maybe I'll take it and then see if it affects my INR. If Ross says to take it, I probably will. I usually treat his word as gospel!

I've never noticed any INR change using it. I guess some people have, so it might be a good idea to check INR about 4 days after starting it to be safe.
