We are back home now in Arizona (not alabama) after two weeks in Cleveland. Has anyone experienced the sore throat and very yucky looking tongue after the surgery? Did the endotrachael tube cause this or is it maybe due to vomiting from the percocet? Nexium was prescribed on day of discharge (no sore throat at this time) so we are wondering whether gastro-
intestinal reflux is to be expected and would cause the mouth and tongue irritation? I have never read anything about this inthe forums. innercalm

It sounds like it might be some kind of infection. White patches on the throat can indicate strep so white patches on the tongue might be a problem.
I would call the doctor and ask.

Could be thrush or could be strep! I would go and get it checked out. You could try a little salt water swish for comfort until you do get to the doc; When Nathan was on IV Rocephin for a week, he did start having some discomfort in his mouth and he swished with a very diluted vinegar/water solution (1:10) twice a day to avoid thrush, and he ate alot of pickles :)

White patches

If you have sore throat and white patches on your tongue, mucus membranes of the mouth, it is most likely Oral Candida, known as thrush. Very uncomfortable but easy to cure. Some docs use lozenges, some use a swish and swallow solution. The easiest and best is Diflucan 150mg pill one time. In any case you need a doc to diagnose to be sure what it is and what treatment they want to use. Sorry you have to deal with this but should be gone in a few days.

I had the same symptoms once in my life......(not after any surgery though). It was thrush. It my memory is correct, I think that was the time that even swallowing water was painful, as the thrush had worked its way down my esophogus (spelling?). I hope you get attention right away.

It definately sounds like thrush. I had the same thing happen to me after surgery, about 3 days after I got home I had white patches on my tongue and it hurt to eat! They told me it was from the antibiotics I took after the surgery. They just called me in a swish and swallow medication and it went away after a few days.

My husband also got thrush, post surgery. He had a "swish" prescribed. Cleared it right up. Bad enough no appetite, but then a sore mouth./throat? Doesn't seem fair.

I think that's what I had post-op. Tongue felt yucky and was all white. This was immediately after surgery, about 2nd or 3rd day post-op. I didn't have any sore throat with it, though.

The yucky color & texture went away after about 2 weeks, but I had no sense of taste for about 4 weeks.

Last week, I developed similar symptoms. My dentist felt that thrush might be the cause. I also had white spots under the tongue. He prescribed Nystatin Oral Suspension, 4 times a day, for a week. ($12.00) I was better two days later.
