Seeing how all of my heart problems are inherited. I had my children checked and my youngest is fine. My 13 yr old had an echo done right before my surgery. I got the call yesterday that he has mitral valve regergitation. It is like mine was mild. I am so concerned because all it will take is one bout of endocridites and he will be in my shoes. I am glad that so far the HOCM (thickening of the heart muscle) was not present at this time. Although the doctor said he has to keep it checked cause it can just show up one day. It was the worst news. It was worse than finding about my problem. Just thought I would let you guys know.

Hi There Atydev

Hi There Atydev

Hi There Atydev,

I just read your post and let me tell ya, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. I am only 5 years older than you and have alot of medical problems myself including HOCM and Congestive Heart Failure....Aren't we just a weeeee bit too young for this? I am sorry about your son having mitral valve regurgitation as THAT IS DEFINITELY WAAAYYY TO YOUNG TO BE HAVING THAT PROBLEM. I am so glad to know that you as a mother had your children checked out as I unfortunately, didn't. I wish I could offer you more than friendship, prayers and laughter, but I hope you will know that I know what your going through and I only hope for the best for you and your children. God Bless and keep on keeping on... Harrybaby666 :D :D :D

I can relate all too well.......

I can relate all too well.......

(((hugs))) I am so sorry to hear about your son's leaky mitral valve. I am afraid that I can't offer you much insight, just a lot of empathy. One bright note  is that you are aware of it and can stay on top of the situation before any irrepairable damage is done.

Take care and God bless..........

Thanks

Thanks

I know that there is not much anyone can do but I am glad to know so early. I know that all's I can do is do all I can to protect his heart. Thanks everyone

April,
Sorry to hear about your son's echo results. Let's hope that he will not realize serious issues at all, or if he does, let it be when he's 80! Encourage him to stay active. Let him know that even though he sees you having problems, it doesn't mean he will.

April,
I understand your feelings. I insisted that my son who was a high school senior have an echo run in late April. He had a murmur as a child, but it seemed to have resolved during his early teenage years.
Lo and Behold, the echo shows he has a bicuspid aortic valve. We are just taking it one day at a time. Actually, I'm taking it one day at a time, because he seems to have no fears at all, and I'm grateful for that.
I know that we aren't alone. I posted a thread back in April and several members responded that their children had similar issues.
However, it was a huge shock when I learned of it, and I imagine that everyone feels that way.

Never too young, lots of folks are born with these kinds of things...

What's important is you know about it before he became symptomatic. You know what's there and what to watch for. You can take antibiotics before going to see the dentist to help protect against endocarditis and you can be mindful of what to look out for.

The BEST way to deal with a heart condition is to be proactive about it. The sooner you know about something the more effective a course of treatment can be.

It's not the end of the world. He's fine now right? Just keep him that way. =)

I am sorry about your son's condition, but at least it was caught and can be monitored. I was born with congental heart defect, hear murmur on the aortic valve. Before birth, they heard a double heartbeat, thinking that I was twins, which they can detect better nowadays. I was born in 1965, so that tells a lot. And I was three months old when diagnosed with the heart murmur. Had repair on the valve in 1973, replaced the aortic valve in 2001. So there is more hope out there. Just hang in there and keep him monitored. Take care.
