you get a good surprise. My brother-in-law and nephew (23) were in a bad roll-over accident on 12/24. They hit a patch of black ice on a freeway entrance ramp, rolled over 2.5 times and the big Ford diesel truck was totaled, but both my BIL and nephew walked away from it (thank you seat belts!!!) and they actually made it up here on Christmas day. When they returned home Christmas evening there was a message from the ER doctor saying my BIL had a suspicious node in his lung, on the xray, and needed to get it checked out.
Last Monday he had a CT scan. The pulmonologist called after it to say he needed a full PET scan done ASAP. So he had it done on Friday. My sister saw the CT report, and as a nurse, said it read "ugly". It showed darkened areas on the liver, enlarged lymph nodes and the node in the lung was rough and spikey not smooth. They were just sure the PET scan (which shows cancer growth) was going to come back horrible.
Today, they went in to talk to the doctor about the PET results. It was completely clear. Nothing "lit up" in his terms. He said that PET scans have a 95% accuracy rating and that if cancer doesn't show up it's usually because it's a slow growing kind (which is also good to hear). My BIL goes back in 3 months for a recheck. If the node is larger, they'll remove it regardless of whether it's cancer or not.
Just on a side note - my BIL takes Coumadin for A-fib. He hit his head rather hard in the accident. The side of his face and above his ear looked kind of purple. But he had no repercusions due to the Coumadin.
Just thought I'd share my good news. It was weighing very heavy on all of my family.
