I wanted to point out some additional references that I have found helpful:
The first paper I found that shed some light on my husband's condition and the relationship between BAVs and aortic aneruysms was the following:
"Ascending Aortic Aneurysm and Dissection in Young Adults with Bicuspid Aortic Valve: Implications for Echocardiographic Surveillance" by John M. Burks, MD, et al., Clincial Cardiology 21, 439-433 (1998) The abstract is online at http://www.clinicalcardiology.org/briefs/9806briefs/cc21-439.html
Another paper that still means a great deal to me is what I call the "when and how" paper from the aortic experts at Mt. Sinai in New York City. It is titled "Surgical treatment of the dilated ascending arota: when and how?" It was presented at the Aortic Surgery Symposium in 1998, and publsihed in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery 1999;67:1834-1839. A search through medline should bring up the abstract. The paper covers the various conditions associated with aortic dilation, including bicuspid valves.
A third helpful reference is a book written by Larry W. Stehenson, MD, a cardiac surgeon. This is intended as an educational resource for patients. It begins with a history of heart surgery in the first chapter. There are many very helpful chapters, a glossary of terms, and some information about commonly used cardiac medications. Chapter 10 is on heart valves, and chapter 13 on aneurysms. This book is available freely online at http://www.ctsnet.org/doc/6394 It can also be purchased in book stores and probably online.
I hope others will find these specific resources helpful.
