I woke up this am with my heart skipping a beat about every 30-60 beats. I called the nurse and this seems to be normal and they were not concerned. It has been going on all day. I have my first post-op appointment tomorrow. Should I be concerned or is this normal? The reason I ask is this never occurred the first time or up until today. Thanks

Believe it or not, it's normal. You can bring it up to the Doctor but don't get frustrated if he doesn't go nuts about it. Things will start getting back to a more normal thing for you soon, it just takes a long time for your body to heal and during the healing, you get all sorts of weird things happening. :)

Hi Mike-

Your heart is all mad at being invaded. Seriously, there is some swelling after surgery and it tends to interrupt the electrical impulses of the heart. When the swelling goes down, your little heart will be happy again.

Make sure to bring it up with your doc, but as Ross already said, don't be surprised if they tell you it's routine.

Good luck.

Ross said it, it is very normal. You will notice many things and I am not saying not to pay attention to them but your body has been through so much and it will take a long time to get back to normal. Until then listen to your body. But notice more how you feel. Peggy

Thank you for your replies. I guess I need to have some sort of set back, it's been to easy up till today. I already feel better just reading your answers. As we all know most of this scary little stuff is not has bad as we make it out to be. Thanks again.

Me too

Me too

Hi Mike, I too had this after returning home, and the very same doctors told me the same thing too. I also had episodes of 'extra' beats. For me it turned out to be electrolyte imbalance due to heavy diuretics. They upped my potassium supplements and voila` no more skipped beats.

Thanks Johnny, I will ask Dr. Verrier tomorrow. Since you mention it, I quit taking the potassium serval days ago when I quit the diuretics. Maybe I should have continued to take the potassium. Just so you know I didn't quit on my own, Tracy the nurse on call said it would be o.k..

Tracy was the one I dealt with too. It was very alarming the first time it happened, cause it made my 2 valves sound like a broken watch...kinda like: Tick tock tick tock tickatickatickatock tick tock tickatickatickatock...LOL. She was very reassuring, and turned out she was right.

Your mileage may vary, standard disclaimers, I'm not a doctor, etc.

I've been on Atenolol and Digoxin since a week after my first AVR almost ten years ago to control the "skipped beat" thing. Even with all the running I do, it has never been "cured" and I just live with it. Some days are worse than others as far as the frequency of these strange beats but they don't impact me in any way other than just being annoying... kind of like some people we all know! Ha! I hope your heart just gets over it and these go away. It is alarming at first but, it seems like most of us have had this happen and it's O.K. Best of everything!

Mike, I thought you were going to swedish? What changed your mind? Dr. Verrier is a very good surgeon. I dealt with Tracy as well, and she knows what she is talking about. For your follow up appointment, don't be surprised if you get Dr. Verrier's PA, A guy named Michael. Dr. Verrier is very busy with the surgeries. I got his PA for the pre op work up and the post op. Maybe it was bob that was going to Swedish. Oy, I am confused.

Hi Joy,
Got the wrong guy. I have always been going to Dr. Verrier. He was my surgeon on the first go around. I agree I will probably not see Dr. Verrier, but every once an awhile he drops by. The person I will be seeing is Denise, she has been with me since my first surgery and very knowledgable. My skipped beats have subsided some today,so based off of everyone informations. I'm sure this is just temp. Thanks

Hi mike, I was just confused! Isn't Dr. Verrier a peach? He visited me while I was in the hospital. He was my surgeon too, in fact I recommended him to Johnny and Mainframe. He was the first and only surgeon I saw, I was so impressed by the sketch he made and the way he explained what was wrong with my heart! WOw, what a smart guy! Who is your cardiologist? IS it at the UW as well? I know chris goes to the UW and sees Dr. Otto, and I see Dr. Doug Stewart. My heart still skips beats a lot. I thik it was the position of the valve that I got and the type of valve that I got. It was annoying, but it's something I've gotten used to and don't even notice anymore.

Yes, he is a great guy. That is why I waited for him to return from his back surgery that he had done in January. In my opinion he is the best. On a survey of best doctors he is rated #1 in the nortwest for thoriac surgeons. So, we are all in good hands.
