Hello my dad had an Aortic Valve replacement and Maze Procedure done 4 months ago he has been doing really good . He started working 2 weeks ago and now we started to notice on his back and chest RED DOTS everywhere and some on his legs and arms as well, at first it didn't itch but now it's starting to itch on his arms. I was wondering if anyone knew to what it might be related. Could it be because of his job cause he sweats alot? He saw the doctor and she said it should go away in about 6-8 weeks?

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance

There is a member here who goes by Rain. She says that hers are caused by her dog digging in her flower bed.

They are probably called petechiae (pa-tech-e-eye) and are like miniature bruises. They are usually harmless. If they get worse bring it to his primary doc's attention. They may or may not go away. They are probably related to warfarin but it is an extension of its intended effect (inhibiting clotting) and probably not an allergy.

Jasko,

I suspect that there are a number of possibilities: a reaction to something touching his skin - perhaps a new brand of soap, wearing new clothes or sleeping on new sheets before washing them can irritate skin. Could be a slight allergic reaction to food - might be a drug reaction. I believe gijanet referred to this in a previous thread: petechia - tiny red dots under the skin that are the result of very small bleeds. Has your dad's INR been tested recently? If so, what was it? What has it been?

Was he shaved in these areas before surgery?

If it's itching I would suspect something contacting his skin - sweating could certainly aggravate it. If doctor is not concerned then I would ask him/her about treatment - something to calm the skin - calamine lotion, hydrocortisone - whatever.

Well his INR was test a week ago and his dose of Warfarin was downgraded from 5mg to 4mg.

Thanks

Jasko,

I looked back at your previous posts & saw that your Dad was on amiodarone after his surgery. Amiodarone affects coumadin in the body - makes it much more effective. Good chance that his INR has been running on the high side, especially if they just dropped his dosage by 20%. Do you know what the reading was? I would definitely think it is petechia.

Not sure didn't ask, whats petiaticha is it dangerous?

Thanks
Petichiaie are small, pinpoint marks, look like blood blisters or small bruises. They are just that, and can be indicitave of the need to readjust anticoagulant dosages, if you are on any. Check your INR and call your doc.

By the way, these petichiaie (or however you spell it, sorry, getting sleepy) do not generally itch, so I am not led to believe this is what they are if the marks are itchy. Have you tried cortisone cream? Or some antifungal cream?

No we haven't and it didn't itsch at first but now his arms itsch a little..

Thanks

Is it spreading? Try some hydrocortisone cream if no allergies. If that doesnt help you could try an anti-fungal, but would need to see a doc if its not clearing up. Anti-fungals can be found in the athlete's foot section or you can even get monistat cream. Both work equally. Fungal would be more patchy though.

Good luck, go to see a doctor though, please if this doesnt start clearing up soon. If you are having mini-bruises, they need to know. Watch your PT/INR rates!

 I thought we had his skin problem settled last week when you posted?
Replies then said it was petechiaie (or close to it :p :p ). Has he had another outbreak?

It;s the same thing I just decided to post on this forum, he has itsching too now so that's why.

Thanks

Be extra cautious with monistat - it can drastically affect INR
