Umm this may sound stupid on my part, but why can't most over the counter remedies be taken? I use anything that works. Nothing I know of is going disturb your Coumadin or INR.

If there is a heartrate problem, then I could understand not being able to take things like Sudafed but none interfere with coumadin (that I am aware of).

I use a combination of benadryl and 12 hour nasal spray for my sinus issues. I tried Flonase (prescription only) for awhile but it made my nose burn so I gave up on it.

If benadryl makes you drowsy, you can try claritin. Benadryl makes me drowsy if I take adult doses so I use the Children's Fastmelt tabs. Smaller dose but still dries up my sinuses without causing drowsiness.

Because I take meds to slow my heart rate, I cannot take any decongestants. But that doesn't have anything to do with taking Coumadin. I have allergies and use Claritin (generic) and sometimes Rhynocort (an Rx).

I have a daughter who's had major sinus issues for years - she's had 3 surgeries etc. etc.

Lay in a supply of Ocean nasal spray and USE IT. The more often you use it the better it'll work. Jewish Hospital in Denver says that using saline spray is the best thing you can do to decrease allergic symptoms - it's used for all of their patients (and they're #1 in US for asthma and respiratory stuff).

If you have clogged sinuses, alternate heat and cold - 20 minutes for each. Don't use heat longer because it'll accelerate bacterial growth.

Try using Flonase again - the burning went away for me after a while.

If you have a sinus infection, go to an ENT - the treatment you'll get is far superior to pcp.

Georgia:

We have a nebulizer to use on our cats -- bought it a number of years ago, and fortunately, have seldom used it.
One of the last times I had an upper respiratory infection, my PCP told me to use the nebulizer with Broncho-sal, I think it's called, a concentrated saline solution. Uses the same principle as the Ocean nasal spray. The fine saline mist gets into the sinus passages and lungs much better than a vaporizer, whcih has larger droplets.

John,
I have been on Coumadin for over nine years now.
I have used an otc nasal spray for many years with no problems.
