I get a lot of them too and I am on Coumadin for a St. Jude mechanical in the mitral position. I don't eat grapefruit but do eat oranges occasionally to keep the potassium up since I take Lasix also. The only thing that helps me is Excedrin aspirin free. It is Tylenol with a kick of caffeine. I also just got a prescription for a beta blocker in case the headaches are migraines. Hope things get better for you.

Glucosamine should have no effect on the INR.

What is all of this stuff about not eating grapefruit. The effect on warfarin is minimal at most.

From taking coumadin? I never have headaches..been on coumadin for almost 2 years First, I have heard that someone may be having headaches from coumadin:confused: Bonnie

That is good to hear Al that glucosamine shouldn't be a problem. I have a bad knee and was taking glucosamine and chondroitin before valve replacement. I have been afraid to start taking it again - when I look for interactions this is about all I could find:

To date, no person allergic to sulfur drugs has had a serious reaction with the elemental sulfur in the supplements. Elemental sulfur is a required nutrient in the body and is found in every cell. Furthermore, virtually all foods we eat contain sulfur.

Coumadin (warfarin sodium) - Glucosamine and chondroitin do not appear to effect blood clotting. Many people use these supplements despite taking the "blood thinner" Coumadin.

There is a concern about unpure chondroitin products that contain a cousin of chondroitin called dermatan sulfate. Dermatan sulfate (sometimes erroneously called chondroitin B) can prolong bleeding time. For some odd reason, some products ... claim to contain chondroitin B on the label. If this truly is dermatan sulfate, I'd make sure to steer clear of this brand.

I believe the concern with prolonged bleeding is not well justified with the recommended brands.

. Chondroitin sulfate B (dermatan sulfate) has anticoagulant properties. Chondroitin sulfate is a component of the antithrombotic danaparoid sodium

I guess I'll try taking it once again - my knee could use it.

There is no such thing as a sulfur drug. It is sulfa. Sulfa contains the element sulfur but it is the chemical structure of the sulfa that is the problem with allergies. Sulfur is included in thousands of drugs that are not sulfa. It ius a very fine distinction but it is the distinction on which the entire matter rests.

Remember that with things like glucosamine, chondroitin other things that are supplements there is no standardization of labeling. Neither is there any requirement under the law that requires that what it says on the label is actually in the bottle. One study showed that about 20% of these products contained none of the ingredients listed. Even if you keep buying the same brand, there is no guarantee.

One more reason I hate rat poison.
