race report

The long version. I hurt myself pretty severely but it was worth it.

The weather was 80F and 100% humidity. It started raining 15 mins before the start and the wetness hung in the air the whole time. I started out at 9:10 pace but couldn't hold it for long, ended up with 28:58, 9:19 avg. That's 23:44 age graded and the best time I've posted since 1996.

It was a small town 5K with less than 100 runners. But it was one I had run last year in 33:57 so it was a 5 minute improvement and I have to be happy with that. About 2 miles into it I felt a twinge of pain in the right calf that I was able to continue running with but had to slow the pace quite a bit. It wasn't a problem as I ran or immediately after but got worse throughout the day. I'm hobbling on a crutch right now and will no doubt be in pain for a couple days.

I'll get over it. Meanwhile I have a trophy that I worked hard for and I'd say it's a fair trade.

Great job. Hope you're feeling better today.

Pffft! I little muscle pain can't diminish a big ego boost. I'm limping with a great big smile on my face.

Here's a little ditty I wrote about the event.

WATER'S IN THE AIR (with apologies to John Paul Young)

Water's in the air
Everywhere I look around
Water's in the air
Every sight and every sound

And I don't know if I'm being foolish
Don't know if I'm being wise
But it's something that I want to run in
And it's there when I look in the skies

Water's in the air
In the whisper of the trees
Water's in the air
In the thunder of the seas

And I don't know if I'm just dreaming
Don't know if I feel sane
But it's something that I want to run in
And it's there when I race in the rain

(Chorus)
Water's in the air, oh, oh, oh...
etc.

Hey Jack, just saw your award
I want one of those when I'm 60!!
Well, I want one now, still working on it.
Little by little I'm getting stronger each day
I have found I LOVE to ride my bike
I'm up to 7 miles everyother day now.
My current goal-- A sprint-tri in Dec. with
my daughter, if I keep working through excerise
everyday I'll be strong enough to do it!!
Take care Debbie :):)

There is life after AVR. To prove it I found the results and photos on line. This pic may come out big but that's their size format, not mine.

Outstanding time - What was your training regiment?

Congratulations!

Outstanding time - What was your training regiment?

I had a pretty intense 12 week interval training schedule beginning in the early spring which is too complex to print here, but it was a plan which I used way back in the 80s with great success. Once a week I would run 200m, 400m or 800m repeats on the track. Then during the summer my town has all-comers T&F meets where you can run any track distance, so I was racing the mile every Monday night for a few weeks.

I got my mile time down to 8:23 and my 5K from 31 minutes in May to just under 29 by July (9:20 per mile). The intent was to run the mile in 8:00 and the 5K around 27-something, but I injured my calf pretty severely in this 5K and I've had to take 3 weeks off completely.

So the 8:23 will have to stand as the best mile I'll do this year but I should be able to recover to run more 5K races in the fall. I don't know if I'll get down to 27 but 28:58 is the best I've run in 12 years.
