I have always said I would never have any interest in movie cameras. Now I have a chance to do something that could be a pretty interesting and (by my standards) pretty important project. It requires writing (check)-still photography (check again) and fairly high quality movie with sound (Rats!).

However, I am the only one allowed to do the photos so I have to become proficient with a movie camera. I have a great Apple computer and most of the software from helping Barb to do movies for her classroom.

What I don't have is a movie camera. Sound recording is critical, and I would like to stay away from something so big as to be intimidating. I would like to stay between $1,000 to $1,500 if possible. Does anyone have a recommendation?

Thanks.

When our volleyball playing daughter was looking at colleges 6 years ago I had to buy a movie camera to put together a sports video to send off to coaches. I borrowed one from another parent; loved it and then went out and bought my own Sony Handycam. They are very point and shoot and user friendly and I'm sure there's one with good sound quality. This was before digital cards, so mine uses the little cassette. I mean wow! now they have High Def! Using my MacBookPro and my little old out-dated Handycam it is a piece of cake putting fun video together. Watch out!! You're gonna have some fun with this!!! (ahem.....granddaughter videos!!!)

Thank you Marguerite. Your post is encouraging, as always. And Marcia, I would love any advice your husband cares to pass along. However, I do need to act quickly. I will keep checking in.

Marguerite-a granddaughter movie will definitely be in the works, and I already know what music I will put in the background. I may have mentioned this story before, but--I have a little bit of talent as a singer, and I have always sung for Ellie the song (I am familiar with the Rod Steawart version) "You are so beautiful to me". One day she crawled into my lap and whispered into my ear "Grampa, am I really beautiful?". You all know my answer. So I am glad for your comment that brought that to mind. There will definitely be an Ellie video in the works. But first I have to get the camera.
