Hi everyone!! Some of you may remember me, Michele, I had valve replacement a year ago on March 3rd.

You might remember that I had to choose between a tissue and mechanical valve. The only reason I was considering the tissue valve was so that I could do pregnancy. However, I ended up going with the mechanical valve because I found a woman who had had two pregnancies with her mechancial valve and I had finally found doctors who supported the idea of mech valve pregnancies.

However, after my surgery, I decided against having biological children. I'm too scared of the risks involved with my valve. But we are adopting from China! In the next couple of weeks, we will find out who our Child is! I can't wait!!! I am over the moon with excitement of the idea of knowing who my baby is! I'm going to be a parent soon!

I don't check in here as often as I'd like, but I do stop in occasionally. And of course, the first thing I search is for new people who are here because they are looking for information on Mechancial valve/tissue valve pregnancies. Old habits are hard to break!!!

I am starting a weblog written by young women with valve issues who want to go through a pregnancy, who have considered a pregnancy, who are trying to get pregant, who have had a pregnancy, who want to adopt, etc.

What I want is for as many women as possible to participate on this blog. The more writers, stories the better. Hopefully, we'll be able to find women who have gone through every possible scenario with mech valve/tissue valve/ pregnancy situation possible.

That way, we'll be there for eachother as well as women who will search for this info in the future. But we need writers, stories, etc. We need young women valvers!!

If you are interested, please let me know. I'm trying to email as many of you as possible, but it will probably take some time to work through the list....so please contact me if you're interested.

I hope this makes sense....I'm writing in a hurry.

Hello to everyone!!!

Michele

Well now congratulations! Granbonnies family just adopted some children from Russia. Not even 3 weeks ago. I'm sure your elated. She still is!

Great news and best wishes that all goes smoothly and quickly. Be sure and post pictures.

Good luck with your weblog project. It is a topic well worth exploring.

Michelle,
Sending you a huge congratulations!!!!! Please post pictures of your new baby when you bring him/her home.

How one "has" children is a very personal choice, but ever since I gave birth to my first child I always understood why adoptive parents' feelings for their children were no different than if they'd biologically produced them. Pregnancy was an interesting experience. (Although my 2nd full term one was the one that tanked my valve.) However, about 30 minutes after giving birth, for me, pregnancy was forgotten, it was all about that little child I now had before me. You will hear parents say "I loved that child the minute we knew we were having him/her." My life-long friend has 2 adopted children. Her response is "I knew I loved that child before I even knew we were adopting her." I assured her that pregnancy does not prepare you for raising children, it just makes your ankles swell.

Wishing and praying for a wonderful adoption experience for you.

Michele,

It's good to hear from you, since we were surgery 'buddies.' I'm glad to hear that you're doing well and that the adoption we talked about (what seems like so long ago!) is finally coming soon. Your blog idea sounds like a great one, and I'm sure it will be very useful to many who are in the same position you were.

Best wishes to you and your husband - I'm looking forward to seeing those baby pictures. Don't forget to pack your Coumadin when you go to China!

Hi Michele.

I am SOOOOOOOOO glad you posted. I feel like there is not enough information about this on this on this site. It is a huge huge concern for any woman in their 20's or 30's, yet the topic so rarely comes up. Why?

In any event CONGRATS on your wonderful wonderful news. I'm so happy for you.

My situation is a bit different. I am not considered a candidate for surgery at this time but do have a fused valve. I have not finished getting the answers to my specific pregnancy questions because of a misdiagnosis last year which took me for a ride (and scared me a bit about doctors), but the issue is totally on my mind.

I have done the research and even w/o valve surgery, it appears as though there are additional pregnancy concerns and risks for women with valve problems, including the possibility of aortic dissection. So while the doctors I've asked (mostly men with older patients) have given me the green light for all activities, I do have a referral for a cardio who specializes in treating women with heart conditions who want to get pregnant. If she gives me the okay, I'll believe it.

In any event I am very interested in your story. I hope you keep posting.

Michelle

Hiya!
So lovely to read your success story and good luck with the adoption!!
I have a 5 year old with a mitral valve replacement so we/she will be facing the choices you've made, at some point in the future.

I do know several people now with a VR that have had children naturally but I also know of others who have adopted - both women with a CHD and women with other problems that have meant they can't concieve naturally. I don't think it matters whether they are your biological children or adopted - the love is the same when the children are that wanted!

So good luck and I can't wait to hear more from you about this!

Would love to participate in your 'blog' but not sure if I would be of any use as only a mum of a patient???

Thank you, all of you!! I promise, the day that I get a picture of my baby, I will rush over here and post her picture for everyone to see!

Bill, whenever I pop in here, I always check in to see what you are up. Can you believe that our surgeries were a year ago!! Pretty amazing.

Hopefully, I'll be back in a couple of weeks with pictures!!!

Hi
Congratulations on your new baby!!

I am really glad that you have decided to start this project.
I have had a valve replacement. I had to choose between tissue and mechenical. I chose tissue for the reason that i wanted to be able to carry a child. It was a really big descision but i feel i have made the right one as I am going to have to have another repair or replacement for my newly leaking mitral valve any way so it wouldnt have made a difference now if i chose mechanical.
Any way back on track..My husband and i havent started trying for a baby yet but i am very thirsty for any information on this subject as having a baby is a big risk for us women valvers to take. I am very keen to become a mother in the future and want to have as much knowledge on the subject as possible. I cant give you a story on being pregnant with a valve condition yet but if i can be of any assistance i would love to help, as this topic is always at the front of my thoughts.
Good luck with the project and with becoming a new mum. :p
