At my age, there is a very important question... Will be my sex dramaticaly changed, becouse of AVR (mechanical)? I don't mean to be a bull :p , but will I be too affected? Does anticoagulation affect potency or something?

I can attest to the fact that it won't! Now if I could just find a woman.........

Now if your on a few meds, they may hinder you a bit, so be mindful of that. Coumadin can cause impotence for some.

You should wait until after you get out of intensive care....

The only med I'm aware of that may affect you in a negative way is a beta blocker. Some men taking beta blocker will have difficulty with arousal...others (how shall we say?) take much longer reaching the top of the mountain to the delight of their partner. Your new aortic valve will allow for more oxygenated blood flow throughout your body and give you more stamina. And at your age (and especially with the nice girlfriend you describe), it is not very likely you'll suffer any negative outcomes....lucky you!

were in the same boat. no issues at all, trust me. and girls seem to actually like the scar!

Hey Pathfinder, maybe you've already seeked others' opinions...but I think you should get a few different opinions about surgery at this time. I had moderate to moderately severe (2 to 3+) regurgitation for many years before surgery in my late 40s. Originally I was diagnosed at age 10 with BAV and regurgitation. If you are not having difficulty with fatigue and other sypmtoms AND your left ventricle is not enlarged too much or hypertrophic, cardiologists may take the wait and see approach for years safey. Regardless of whether you have surgery in the near future or many years down the road, my strongest recommendation is for you to insist on periodic echo evaluations and CT scan (or MRI) of your ascending aorta. BAV patients with regurgitation (as opposed to BAV w/ stenosis only) are more likely to have aneursmal dilatation of the ascending aorta over time and need elective surgery when the size reaches around 5.0cm (or possibly 4.5cm).
Good luck, pathfinder.
And Ross, I have some funny stories about my nurses...but simply will not share on this forum...ha

Some of those ICU nurses, well...............

*grins devilishly*

ESPECIALLY if you're in a Children's Hospital ... they tend to like the older patients since they're around children all day ;).

He he he

*sighs*

Sadly, I don't know about this thing called sex, tho....

Its an important question at any age buddy :D

There is no affect at all, if it works well now it will work well post surgery, if you are a dud now you will be a dud post surgery. ;)

The only thing that can affect you post surgery is psycological issues but this would be the same for any life altering surgery.

As long as you can find somewhere to put it you will be fine

If you have the full sternotomy, you shouldn't do anything like a pushup for a month or so after surgery.

However, that only affects technique, not ability. A little creativity will get you past that issue.

Best wishes,

I had no problems after surgery, nothing will be any different, atleast it wasnt for me.

I was beginning to wonder why the Ladies were not posting...:D then, Ann posted...You go, Girl:p ...Of course, Ross posted 3 times.:D His favorite subject.:p ..After taking care of me..my Hubby was too tired to think about sex for a few months.:D He was doing all the cooking, housework, ect......tried to drag it out..Not sex..his doing the housework for a few months.:p ...Bonnie

There's sex after AVR.
Heck, I can't remember much before AVR.
Someone should've told me!!

I am mad now.

When my AVR was done the nurse doing my discharge said sex at 2 weeks post-op!!! I gave her the most awful look (I think she actually thought I was going to come after her), not only because I was on my 10th day in that place, but she said it front of my kids AND, God-forbid, MY HUSBAND! The kids turned red, the husband got a huge grin on his face and I told her she was nuts!!:D

Once healed....all will be good again!

Where there is a will, there is a way. On the instructions I got from my orthopedic it said no sex for six weeks after knee replacement. Right! !:( :(

Interesting thread!

I remember going along to the rehab interview at 3 weeks post op and the nurse was discussing the do's and don'ts at this stage after leaving hospital.
She went thro daily living tasks and many I had done when I shouldn't then the says well on the topic of sex.   I stop her and say are you going to tell me I shouldn't be having sex at this stage, because if you are I think we should be given a handout when we leave hospital as you are too late with that advice. She looks horrified and says I hope you are being creative. :) Always was the reply.;)

Seriously I didn't have many symptoms as I slipped further and further into sever regurgitation, but looking back now sex was one of the few areas I as going down hill. Glad to beback to normal now.

My husband was in the hospital 7 days waiting for his INR to come up. I was laying in the hospital bed with him watching a movie and the nurse came in to check on him and give him his meds. When she left she winked and said want me to shut the door on my way out. We had been married 34 years at that time. We only waited 2 days after he came home. It was that darn backrub I was giving him that started it.
