For those of us severe asthmatics be careful on anticoagulants. I had severe bleeding into the rectus abdominus sheath of my abdominal muscles twice 1 and 1/2 years apart during severe asthma flares. I was on high dose steroid therapy that weakens support of blood vessel walls, that coupled with severe coughing for weeks and being on anticoagulants (first coumadin with an elevated INR and the second on aspirin with normal INR) caused the bleeding. I started as a severe burning pain that worsened over minutes and caused a swelling in my abdominal wall that is still there 2 months later. Each time I was in the hospital for nearly a week. For this reason I will be getting a biologic valve during my AVR surgery next week. NO anticoagulants for me!
date set: April 25th for AVR, EF 45% on cardiac cath April 18th., decreased contractility; unstable angina with no significant coronary artery dz. On diltiazem, nitrates, ranazoline "When you're ready or when the numbers dictate." per my cardiologist. Time has come.
