Hi there
I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I am on warfarina and plavix plus the other med. I got a bladder infection this week which I'm taking antibotics for but I noticed over the last couple of days my skin is very sensitive. Must have had a itch in my ear in my sleep and scratched it the next morning there was blood on my pillow and a little sore in my ear (upper ear). Then today rubbed my nose a little to hard I guess cause it started to bleed. If I get a itch and scratch it, I feel like I'm tearing skin from myself cause it hurts. My inr was 2.9 on Wed. was in the normal range and has been there for quite some time. I have been taking 5mg of warfarin for a couple of months now with no need to change cause the inr has been in the right range for me. Has anyone else noticed this in their skin or is it just coincidence(spelling) for me. Just thought I'd ask.
Thanks

I think I'd ask what other meds your on. I'm sure there is something that is causing this and it's not the Coumadin or Plavix. If your taking a antibiotic for the bladder infection, have you tested your INR 3 days after starting the antibiotic? I'll almost bet your INR is high because of it, which would explain the bleeding, but I don't know about the sensitive skin issue.

Hi Ross
That was a real fast reply. THANKS> I had me irn checked 3 days after the antibotics, that was the reading of 2.9. The other meds. that I am on are lasic, amioderone, and a blood pressure pill. Maybe the antibotics that is causing this along with the infection. I didn't realize that an infection was so much worry with a mitral valve but was soon told my coctor about the reality of it. Learn has we go I guess. This forum is really helpful though. I can depend on the replys. Again Thanks

AMIODARONE....

That might be it, it's wicked stuff that can really screw you up.

How long have you been on it? You need to get a complete physical, chest x-ray, and breathing tests every 6 months to make sure it's not causing problems with your lungs.

There are all other kinds of "happy" side effects like blindness and kidney trouble...

Be careful though. I just went off it a few weeks ago and my INR/PT shot up to 5.6 for a week. We got it back down without too much effort, just cut back on my coumadin doses for a few days, but it was out of whack.

Ask your docs about the amiodarone. I didn't know about all the testing until my primary physician asked when I last had a chest x-ray because of it, at the time I hadn't had one since getting home from the hospital after surgery, about 5 months.

Check out http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/medmaster/a687009.html

I used to have another link for checking information on any drug you might want but it doesn't seem to work anymore...

I'm still on a medication called spironolactone, a diuretic, which causes increased skin sensitivity (among other things) and I've found a lot of my "tactile" senses, touching hot cups or bowls, is greatly amplified.

My wife will pick up a cup of coffee no problem I say it's too hot, though the cup isn't that hot...

It's most likely the antibiotic raising cane with you. Which antibiotic did they put you on? Amiodarone is nasty, that's a given, but you've been on it awhile now haven't you? A friend of mine is just coming off of it after almost 3 years. It's not by choice, but if they don't get him off, his liver will be history. They're going to try some other drugs for his chronic afib and if it doens't work out, he'll have to have surgery and that's the last thing he wants. I think we all know why.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive Skin

I would think it is the antibiotic that is causing your skin too itch,

Back in 1999 I was on an antibiotic called Cephtriaxone for three weeks with no side effects then i developed an itch and a small rash, Dr said it could not be the antibiotic

So they continued to give it too me ( Through a Hickman Line ) it just got worse, I got blisters all over my body,

I was really sick, I looked like I had been scalded,

I then refused to take the antibiotic, but it took another 7 weeks for all the blisters too go

I had it put on my records that i was not too be given any Cephlesporins, and guess what after my AVR they gave me Cephataxeem, But that is another story

I do not want too alarm you, but read the labels on any meds you take

Jan you should have seen what Vancomycin did to me! I had to take it, there was no alternative except possibly replacing my valve if the infection would have made it's home in the suture ring. :(

Just a side note.

With many drugs it may take awhile before the levels reach a "critical mass" in your system and trigger an allergy. I was recently on Septra, and I took it for 8 days with no problems before I started to show allergic symptoms. I went from totally fine to severe rash and hives in a matter of a couple of hours. My skin is still very sensitive and I had all kinds of problems with skinburn blisters with my PICC line dressing.

If in doubt check it out. Let your doctor know ASAP!

Antibotic

Antibotic

I am alergic to amoxicillin, due to having penicillin all my years. When the cillin build up, I would up have a reaction. I take celphlaxin, not sure if spelt right, till I react to this. This is for the dental work. I had my reaction in the dentst office, skin itched and problem breathing a little. So I made sure every doctor knows not to give me amoxicillin. Check with a doctor to see if the antiobotic is the cause for sure and change the med. No two people react the same to antibotics. Take care.

My daughter had a blistery reaction to Septra years ago when she was 4. Fine one moment, covered with oozy stuff the next. Doc said it was NOT an allergic reaction but rather she'd been on it too long. Subsequently used it with no problem, but never for a long time.
