I wasn't sure where to put this so here it goes. A school buddy of mine was getting his pro-time checked when I was getting mine at the hospital. He had an aortic replacement at Mayo's and they wanted him to take a home testing kit home with him and he refused. I told him that I think he would like the convenience of doing his own versus at the hospital. Since it is only 3 weeks, they are still getting him in range. He has a St. Jude valve. Wish they would have offered me one when I had mine.It is difficult now to get the insurance company to pay for it now. This is the first time I have heard of this.

Marcia, I think your friend refused the home tester because he is just not ready or confident enough to do it. I'm sure that once he has been on Coumadin for a few more weeks he will realize that there is nothing to be afraid of with home testing. I was 20 months post op before I felt that I could do the home testing and not be nervous with it. Now I laugh at how simple it is.:)

Hopefully he'll be able to change his mind and get one once the fog lifts and he begins to understand how it will simplify his life.
