Anyone here scuba dive with their mechanical valve? I had my surgery July 1 and would like to scuba again. Anyone here still diving after their valve replacement?

I still scuba dive albeit very rarely these days since I have to travel to good places. I do keep in practice in my pool and the valve is very interesting to listen to while underwater.

I was told that diving very deep (more than 100 feet) might be a problem with coumadin and pressure bruising but I have never been a deep diver so I haven't tested that issue.

DAN is the one

DAN is the one

I contacted DAN a few weeks after surgery to ask as they are the Gurus on SCUBA. I found they know nothing and they were not willing to research it.

Got nothing for my premiums to their insurance.

Just wondering if diving could be done or not again.

Sorry you had that kind of experience with DAN because I would have expected it to have been more positive. What does your doctor say? It just seems to me like it would be much more dangerous to dive with a faulty valve before valve replacement than afterward with a valve that functions more efficiently. But I haven't been diving in over 15 years and really have no plans on doing it again.

BVDR, The surgeon felt as you do and I also felt that way but he was advised to ask DAN who said gee we wouldn't do it and gave no reason when the Dr asked for a little more info to why.

The surgeon said my valve is not going to go anywhere and I am not going to bleed to death.

Bottom line, there are lots of people out there just waiting for an event to happen and they don't even know it.

My boyfriend Jim has had a mechanical aortic valve since December 2003.

Neither of us has ever been SCUBA diving, but at his post-op check-up with his cardio, we asked if there were any limitations on what he could now do. The answer we got was "you can do what you like, even SCUBA diving if you want to"! So his cardio at least saw no problems with it.

Hope this is of some help :) .

Gemma.

Gemmaj, Thanks. I see no reason why I should not but I need a Dr. OK. I was doing it before with a valve that was going bad or bad. Why not with a fixed heart?
