I had a chance to drive over to Chimayo today. The Santuario de Chimayo is a very important spiritual place, especially for Catholics in Northern New Mexico. In fact, the little church draws people from around the world. I will have other pictures to publish later-this was taken as you walk up from the river to the church.

Beautiful picture Dennis!

We've been to Chimayo a couple of times & have always loved going there.

A lot of history & spiritual mystery to that place......did you read the story of how the santuario was built? Pretty amazing. And the story behind the "holy" dirt that creats itself in the pit?

Will be waiting for more pics! :)

Freddie-I am happy to post more pictures.

This is the actual church building. It is indeed a tiny, but obviously sacred place. I lifted the following from a Wikipedia entry concerning the church:

El Santuario de Chimayó is a Roman Catholic church in Chimayó, New Mexico, USA. This santuario (Spanish for "sanctuary"), a National Historic Landmark, is famous for the story of its founding and as a contemporary pilgrimage site. It receives almost 300,000 visitors per year[3][4] and has been called "no doubt the most important Catholic pilgrimage center in the United States."[5]

Tomorrow I will try to post a picture from about 8 miles up the road-the little town of Truchas. Truchas is set in beautiful high mountains. It is now the home of many small artist galleries. Several years ago when Barb and I first bicycled into Truchas we discovered a beautiful little town that was remote, and very tough. At that time we were told the law didn't come to Truchas after dark. From fist fights to gun fights you were on your own till daylight.

We spent that night at a bed and breakfast run by a retired University of Colorado professor. The place was guarded by "Eutick", 3/4 wolf and 1/4 dog. He was a really large animal. I have always been a very light sleeper, with exceptional hearing. It was a beautiful night with a full moon. Sitting up at night I would catch an occasional glimpse of him making his "rounds". But I never heard him bark-I never heard him coming, and I never heard him go. But it was comforting to know that nothing was going to slip by him.
