I started to put this under Small Talk, but thought perhaps it really belonged here.

When I exited off Interstate 20 to take a rural road to my home yesterday, I noticed a van on the shoulder near the stop sign. Driver was trekking down the access road with 5-gallon gas can. I decided it was too hot and that he needed help (hoping someone would do the same for me in the same situation).
I offered him a lift & found out he had left his wallet at home yesterday morning. He's a tile setter, had his wife with him in their van.
I bought him 5 gallons of gas & he told me he has CHF. Not realizing I knew the term, he went on to explain that he has an enlarged heart, 2 bad valves (couldn't remember which, but sounds like aortic & mitral) and that nearly all the men in his family have died early from heart ailments. Talked about having a-flutter, being on Coumadin.
Then I said, "I had to have a valve replaced."
He was really taken aback.
I felt very fortunate that I had medical insurance, that I was not self-employed like this man and that I was able to have my surgery. I did not ask why he had not had surgery, but I assume that being self-employed and in the occupation he has that he's just putting up with his heart ailment.
The man was so grateful that I told him he could call me and set up a time to replace a cracked ceramic soap dish in our guest bath. Dunno if he'll call, but if he does I will tell him about valvereplacement.com.

I believe that God put you two together for a reason. The older I become, the less I believe in coincidence. That interaction may help to save his life - bless you!!

My parents were divorced when I was young (2). My dad died when I was 7 and my step dad adopted my brother and I. We have had little to no contact with my father's family - regrettably. I was diagnosed with severe AI 2 weeks ago. 4 days after the diagnosis - my aunt called to see how we were doing - first contact in 12 years - out of the blue. During the conversation, I found out that my dad's older sister almost died 2 years ago and was rushed in for emergency VALVE surgery. She is doing well now, by the way. I feel the same way about our interaction - things happen for a reason.

I think that you are an instrument (so many on this site) - that is a blessing :) Thank you

Thank you for doing that. It is hot in Texas and you truly helped them out of a potentially dangerous spot. People do that here. I had a flat on the way to town; people stopped, some came out of the plant where I had to get off the road. I was truly grateful to them all.

Wow! Got goose bumps reading this one!!!

Wow! Got goose bumps reading this one!!!

And no, that was NOT a tear in my eye. Bravo to you...........and yes, I think it was meant to be. I bet he does call you to fix that dish, too. Maybe you can now convince him to get on here, and maybe we can all put our heads together to convince him to get those valves fixed and figure out a way to do it. Many hugs. J.

Not to be negative, but I can't help but wonder why you didn't mention VR.com at the time. Do you know how to contact him?

Al:
I did think of mentioning it, but the man was in a big hurry to get back to his vehicle & his wife. He was distraught about his situation, tired and very hot. He left his wife with the van and was very worried about her. Several weeks ago, a woman truck driver was abducted in her truck by a man in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The woman was forced to drive through several counties for quite a long time. Finally, some state troopers shot out the radiator, tires or something. This incident was very much on the tile setter's mind since he kept referring to it.
He was very glad to see her still there when we got back to his van.
