I'm not an athlete, just a walker. My Grasshoppers & Rockports so far suffice for that.
HOWEVER, I am a new cat show judge and need better, more shock-absorbant shoes. Judged my first show solo 7/17 in Long Beach CA at the carpeted convention center there. Egads! My feet were extremely sore Saturday night. My sister, who walks all day long as a retail store employee, suggested getting Nike running (not walking) shoes, something w/ "air" in the name. Someone who used to show dogs suggested something that sounded like axis, not spelled that way, forgot spelling.

Am sure there's lots of runners here who can give their $0.02 worth to help me.

TIA!

Marsha,

Hurting feet are the pits. You need to be nice to those "puppies".

I buy my shoes at Run On Dallas. The people at the Dallas and Richardson locations are wonderful. I'm sure that I pay an extra $10-15 per pair, but the advice is worth it. Here's one closer to you.

Hi Marsha,

I am a recreational jogger, so I but good shoes to run. When they begin to show signs of wear (about every 6 months) I buy new shoes to run and use the older pair for casual/walking shoes. I;ve been using Asics shoes for several years and really like them. The most recent pair are the Gel Kayano IX (I think) -- they have gel-filled soles and plenty of cushioning. A bit pricey ($130 retail, $89 discounted), but IMHO are really worth the price.

Thanks for the tips. Will investigate all these. I did go to Academy sporting goods after work yesterday, but thought the shoes were less than adequate for my needs. Price range I saw was about $40-$60. I would have expected at least $75.

I had surgery on both feet (bunionectomy, including shortening of a metatarsal bone in each foot) in 1980. Thus my concern about having extremely comfortable shoes.

Tom: Sounds like the Run On! may be near Central Market (Hulen & I-30), where I grocery-shop on my way home from work.

Sherry: Have the website bookmarked.

Steve: I think Asics may be the brand the former dog breeder mentioned. She said they are wonderful. BTW, had a great time walking around the Coronado Springs resort in Orlando last month at the Cat Fanciers Association convention. Drove from our unit to the meetings, but in the a.m. and p.m. I walked around the lake, went swimming, etc.

Got my shoes! And a question ...

Got my shoes! And a question ...

Looked at shoes at quite a few places. Saturday I went to Run On! on Hulen in Fort Worth and tried on several pairs, different manufacturers. Bought a pair of Brooks. Men's instead of women's shoes, because they felt better and were less "flashy," more neutral-looking.

These shoes are bigger than street shoes, so I would prefer to wear them when traveling & pack my street shoes in my rollerboard. It appears that no metal is used in the shoe, so I should be able to go through security at airports. Anyone ever go through airport security wearing running shoes and not have to take them off?

Marsha,

My latest pair of running shoes are Brooks Adrenaline - from Run ON Dallas. 2 full sizes bigger than my dress shoes - 12. The recomendation for runners is 1 full size larger, but the 13's just seemed cramped and they don't make 13 1/2's. I wear thick shocks, so it works out well. My feet feel much better in these 14's than my old 13's. I still have some mileage left in the 13's and will use them for shorter runs.

Somehow I remember being size 11-1/2 20 years ago. Does your body sag into your feet?

I always take off my shoes at airport security. It just seems to be better than the treatment you get when you set off the machine. PS Yesterday I left my pocket knife in my carry-on suitcase. I was going to check that bag, but at the last minute decided to carry it on. Forgot the sharpies that I had put there. Had to mail the knife home. They missed the nail clipper.

I usually buy New Balance 715-I am about 185lbs-which is considered heavy for a runner--I had a valve sparing surgery with contingiencies for a porcine valve if needed-I run alot-it is ironic though-my frequent running buddie had a st. judes valve replacement-he is a better runner than I am -he always was a good athlete-he has kept his good eating habits-the coumidin does not seem to effect his endurance. Sometimes you can get a good running shoe on clearance..I have found some bargains-type in the name of your shoe or the shoe you want to buy-in google (serch engine) and you can probably find info as well as reviews. Tom:

When I went to Run On, the woman brought out about 4 pairs. Tried them all on w/ socks and I went with what felt the most comfortable -- and this was late in the afternoon, maybe 4 p.m. I bought men's shoes instead of women's, so I may look for men's shoes when I buy a 2nd pair in several months. Mainly because I prefer more neutral-looking shoes than "fashionable" ones.

BTW, you **can** fly with nail clippers. I always fly with clippers in case I have to trim nails on a cat. When I check luggage, I put a pocketknife in an outer pocket of the bag. When the TSA came on board at airports, I had a few checked pieces sealed by the TSA; the only scissors I had packed were in the sealed bag. I learned quickly to put a pocketknife in an exterior compartment for easy access to snip the plastic cords they were sealings bags with.

Flying to Ontario CA this weekend. Will find out if I can get through security wearing the Brooks.

Marsha,

I ran 7 miles this morning in my "old shoes" - Sauconies that have about half their life left. My toes hurt a little. They have not hurt like that since I got the Brooks. I'll relegate the Sauconies to runs of 5 miles or less from now on.

PS.....the Saucony brand is excellent. It's all about a "fit" and "comfort". Glad you found a match.

I'm with you, I don't like the flashy-color shoes. I like neutral colors .............................. Besides, the flashy colors might clash with the rest of my outfit  :D  :D

Have a great trip west.

Don't go through airport security

wearing shoes!
Tom:

I went through security at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport on Friday (8/20) wearing my Brooks. I was flying with a Birman kitten, so I took the kitten out of his soft-sided carrier, put that & my TravelPro on the conveyer belt. Agent said he "strongly advised" me to remove the shoes. I said there was no metal inside and that they shouldn't set off the detectors.

Big mistake.

I was pulled aside after going through the detector -- BTW, the shoes did NOT set off the machine -- and given the 3rd degree. Both my kitten and I were hand-wanded, I had to fork over my boarding pass & ID, my luggage was searched and some items (metal combs & pin brush for the Birman, my hair brush and my comb) were run back through the machines. TSA employee said I should send Richard Reid a thank-you note. He's the shoe bomber who was caught back in November or December 2001.

Going through security in Ontario, Calif., late last night, I **did** take off my shoes. Just a pain in the you-know-what to have to put them back on.

I did use the exercise room at the Doubletree hotel in Ontario. Never used a treadmill before.

Hi Marsha

In addition to the running shoes, I highly recommend Birkenstocks. They conform to fit your foot. Mostly they're sandals or open-toed shoes, but they are MAJORLY comfortable. Not the prettiest, more on the clunky side, but definitely comfortable. If you have QVC by you you can order them or just go on Birkenstock's web site. They'll run between $50 and $75, but last forever and they'll replace anything that wears out free of charge.

If you're a "clog" person, DANSKO makes wonderful clogs.

They're both just a bit dressier than running shoes for cat shows. For dog shows I also recommend Easy Spirit....very comfortable for running around the ring, but not as comfortable as the Birkies or Danskos are for judging.

Happy trails.

Evelyn
