stumbled upon the following post during a google search:

Nick/Derek

I had a discussion with Richard Devereux today. He is one of the nations foremost aortic root researchers. I thought Id share some of the discussion with you guys

He felt that up to 4.2cm is normal in full frame adult males with BSA over 2m2 and that 4.4 or less if over 40years old.

He said that borderline dilation if stable is nothing to worry about, and no restrictions are warranted except for extreme weight lifting which he felt was bad for ANYONE due to its ability to disrupt plaque ect..

He also agreed that athletic backgroud can cause aorta enlargement, especially in those with a lot of lean muscle mass as it increases the stroke output.

It is his opinion that aortic root dialation is over diagnosed when standard reference values are applied (3.7).

Judging by the depth of his responses I have a good deal of confidence that this guy knows what he is talking about.

Just thought I would share.....

curious if any of you know of this doctors work/research and know of any pubications which would support the above. this perspective pushes the normal root range well beyond what i have seen in any other studies (up to 4.2 w/ a BSA over 2).

Yes, I seen that on google. I've made a search on him before, and he sounds that he knows what he is talking about. I think he made alot of research on Marfans.

My cardiologist also thinks that normal root can go up to 42mm on those with a BSA of 2+ .... The measurements are all based on bells theory, and thefore, the mean is about 38mm on the rood, but that doesn't mean that on some individuals 42, 45 or whatever is not normal!... just guidlines I suppose, and unnecessarily anxiety like they given me.
