Harpoon

Was digging through my "voluminous" archives of digital images that I've shot during my (almost) 5 years at the paper and this one caught my attention...

Were We Thinking The Same Thing???

Were We Thinking The Same Thing???

Hey Harpoon,
Just out of curiosity, were we thinking the same thing by changing our avitars? LOL Harrybaby :D :D :D :D

mooo you!

mooo you!

Harpoon, how nice that you have your own collection of great shots. Lately I've been stealing mine from the newspaper --it's so easily done! Do yours all have protection from people like me??

Heehee... Yeah, it's called U.S Copyright. =)

There's a lot of leeway involved though. You may notice that if I ever post something I found on the AP wire, I always give credit to the source, albeit brief. I also don't monkey with the photos and they are the sort of thing you could easily see in your own newspaper or a magazine anyways.

I have a such a "collection" because it's what I do. I've been shooting for the newspaper here for almost 5 years now. I've got tons of photos of just about everything you can think of. Plus I've got a lot of stuff I've shot outside of the office on my own time, my own personal work and family stuff and stuff I just see and need to shoot.

I'm not making it yet, but I really do want what I'm doing now to be a career. I don't get the pay I want now, or the hours, not even close, but I'm still plugging away because I LOVE the work and, for the moment at least, I can follow my passion and still manage to eek out a living of some kind. I'm just hoping I can make the next step into earning a real living wage for what I do. That's gonna take a little schooling and probably relocation to another region of the state (if not the country) for a better paying job. I don't really want to have to move my family, but it's in the cards at this point....

My other "great" passion (I have several actually) is in film making and I've had this pipe-dream of becoming a cinematographer. That requires relocating just for the schooling, something I'm in no position to do right now or will be for the next five years at least.

Maybe some day, after really solidifying myself as a "world class" (what my wife keeps pushing me for) photographer...

In the mean time I shoot stuff like this to try and pay my bills:

Oh, that rose is just dreamy. Your art is your best, I'm sure. Sounds like you are finding a balance, something to bring home the bacon, and time to perfect your art.

I have always loved photography. My father was an avid photography hobbiest, not into the darkroom though, just getting (and showing.....for hours!! and hours!!!) his slides. I've lived in Africa (too young to remember it) and Micronesia (teenager there!) so my visual surroundings are very important to me since I've learned to "see" so much.

My husband is a great photographer and he got a great new camera at my insistance 10 years ago when we had the opportunity to safari in Tanzania. We came home with some fabulous shots. An amazing experience. Anyway, I never touched his camera until our oldest started playing Lacrosse in HS. The coach wanted some shots for the newspaper (our local paper is SO supportive of our HS but the photographer was not always available and lacrosse wasn't too big a deal yet) so I volunteered. They supplied the film (the team) and away I went. I had SO MUCH FUN!! Shooting sports is a gas. My photos were used every week for 2 seasons. And they made it into the HS yearbook. And actually, one photo made it to the cover of a magazine!!

Then my daughter started playing serious volleyball (she's a senior and the varsity team is currently ranked 19th in nation. Last year's State Champs. THis year undefeated with 4 matches to go, 2 tourneys down -- first place -- 2 more to go) so I've tried to get some shots of her. I only have a normal telephoto with a good Canon (old Rebel style plus -- don't remember the number EOS or something) so I get 1600 and bump it to 3200 and then out of a roll, I guess I get about 4 good shots. I try to get the closeup actions and it's so hard in these old dark gyms. THe telephoto lens is a variable 100-300 I think. Volleyball is unpredictable and quick and it's a very difficult game to shoot.

Actually, our daughter seems to be one of the newspaper photographer's(community, now, not the Oregonian) favorites. There's a huge quarter page photo of her this week!! I guess he just knows how to anticipate her!! That seems to be the key. At least it was for me in lacrosse. Anticipate.

Oh, maybe I shouldn't use up the VR.com airwaves with this. Sorry :(

Anyway, it is such an art. So much hit and miss. I'm so glad they've come out with digital, but my new camera (my husband got it for me for my 50th -- An Olympus C5060 Wide angle zoom) doesn't have the zoom I'm accustomed to (the digital zoom can't really handle the indoors unless it's a really new, bright gym). I'm not at all trained, so I have no idea what I'm doing anyway!! But, it's fun to learn the new format. Volleyball will be over in a few months and then I' can concentrate on outdoors and Mother Nature. I'm so used to a moving target though........guess I'd better prop a tripod up at Mount St. Helens and wait for some action!!!

  I'm rambling!!!

Share more photos!! THey're wonderful!! (I am NOT stealing them. And I will start to ID the ones I borrow!!)

Heeheehee.... =)

One of the greatest thrills I get is from shooting something cool like a good sporting event or some big news story. It's a neat rush getting to do stuff like that, getting the access too. I have an added bonus that comes up a lot while shooting stuff like football games, this little voice inside my head that gently reminds me how, less than two years ago, I was struggling for my very survival in a pICU bed at Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital after having my tricuspid valve replaced.

Two weekends ago I was in the worst downpour of the season shooting a football game and I loved it because I was THERE, alive and chasing the action down the field with my camera in hand.

Just amazing stuff.

I'm thinking I should make up a few prints of my work, both art and news, to send to Dr. Mee in Cleveland as a little thankyou gift...

One thing to add. It's not mine, the photo was shot by one of our reporters who was doing police rounds, collecting info on arrest reports and such. He had just left the station when a "gentleman" driving a white mini-van slammed into the back of a parked pick-up truck as shown. The driver of the van was probably drunk, had a prior record of convictions including cocaine sales and he just happened to hit a pick-up truck belonging to one of the police officers that was inside the station....

The reporter's suggested cutline:

Replacing a burned out right headlight:

$58.00

BBQ wing special while watching the game:

$4.00

12 shots of Crown to go with the wings:

$37.00

Smashing your car into the parked personal vehicle of a police officer in front of police headquarters:

PRICELESS
