Adam Pick has posted a link on Twitter to a short interview by one of the authors of a recent paper entitled Asymptomatic degenerative mitral regurgitation repair: Validating guidelines for early intervention. The interview link is here: Patient Research Alert: Is Early Surgery Recommended for Asymptomatic Mitral Regurgitation?

The findings are that early surgery, before symptoms develop, has an excellent prognosis. In a study of 500 people:
  • At 30 days after surgery, patient survival was 100%.
  • Ten years after mitral valve surgery, no patients needed a second operation or re-operation.
  • After 10 years, only 1% of patients had more than moderate mitral regurgitation.
I'm certainly glad to see these positive results!

I should have had mitral valve replaced at first sign of problem. I think more aggressive approach is best. Great info in study.
