... THis was a news I was always so hoping to hear - in Germany they now repaired/inserted a new mitral valve into a patient via cardiac catheter w/o open heart...it is the first time ever and there will be a trial for 2 years in various heart units in Europe (could not find if UK is incl.) and then after 2 years it will be evaluated how successful it is - this cath was done with a 62 year old - so maybe if successful quite a few years to go before trials with children might start, but at least some hope for some of us that there might be other options in a few years w/o our children always having the risk of open heart.
THe newsstory in German is under http://www.abendblatt.de/daten/2005...1848.html...you can get this translated as well, but usually the translations are very funny sounding.

Hi Emma, although I come from a German family on my mother's side, I can't understand it except for a few basic words. I know what you mean by funny translation, I've seen quite a few things translated from Portuguese into English myself! Many of the things just don't make any sense! Again, I wonder if this new technique will also be available for redos. Thanks for posting.

Looking forward to reading it!

Looking forward to reading it!

That's nice Emma. Once it's ready I'll be very happy to read it! How's wee Chloe doing? Bruna's fine and excited about going to the cinema with Robert tomorrow! LOL! I'll just take the chance to get a good rest since she's been on holiday for the past couple of weeks and will be for the next one too. Take care!

Emma & Debora:

One of my nephews-in-law is involved in investments for a health-related company. When I saw him earlier this month, he mentioned about keeping up with developments in cardiac surgery, i.e., valve replacement via catheter.
He has also visited Medtronics & other cardiac device manufacturers. He's sat in on cardiac surgery before.
He just got his MBA in finance (with honors!) from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

I'll probably see him the last weekend in August. Will pump him for more details on cardiac surgery via catheter.
When I had my MVR, he seemed to know quite a bit about the procedure I had.

What's interesting is that his dad is a longtime funeral director ... guess that's why nothing fazes my nephew-in-law!!!!!!!!!!!!!
