my father is facing his 3rd open heart surgery within 4 years (2 prior mitral valve repairs that leaked). Does anyone have any inspirational stories I can share with him?

So sorry to hear about your father. I'm a veteran of two AVRs and am facing a third in the future. You can read a brief "history" in the Personal Stories section on this site. The point being, he CAN get through this. Everyone on this site is, and will be your source of information, support and most of all, caring. Good luck and best wishes to your father. Keep us posted.

I too am a veteran. I have had 4 valve repair/replacement surgeries. I don't know about your father but I really believe the surgeries get easier the more you have at least your emotions can handle it alot better. I too am looking at another surgery in the future. I try to keep a possitive attitude. The only thing I am certain of is that the surgeries seem to get easier for me. That's probably because of the technology we have now. Good luck to your father and please keeep us posted. Peggy

 I to have had surgeries, 2 homograft AVR and finally a St. Jude AVR, with a mitral repair, at the advanced age of 42 I expect to have a 4th at some time. It gets alot easier really.

Hi jjwb-

Welcome to the site. It's a terrific place where everyone knows so much about valve surgeries and way beyond. Smart group of people and very nice as well. We all really care.

My husband has had 3 valve surgeries, 2 lung surgeries, has a pacemaker and has had a lot of other very serious things, some of which were worse than his valve surgeries.

He just had his last surgery, a repair on the mitral which was leaking, in July of 2001. That one was done with the Heart Port method through the side and was a much better deal, recovery-wise. Joe is 71 years old, and he's still chugging along. His valves are mechanical.

So your dad will be fine. It'll be a little longer recovery than the "young-uns", but he'll get there. It sure beats the alternative.

Please feel free to come here often and ask us any questions you want. You're bound to get a lot of answers.

And let us know the date of his surgery because we love to follow our family though the process. We'll put him on the calendar.

Nice to meet you.

Dido to what Nancy has just said. She always know what and how to say things that are needed to be heard.

Keep us posted on your father.
