I had never heard of Natto before Nick Yuki started the thread on it. I found it interesting tonight, as I was watching Iron Chef on the Food Network, that the theme ingredient was Natto.

I usually pride myself in being willing to try anything but I must say this stuff looks disgusting. It basically looks like beans with a slimy gooey coating that forms long threads when the spoon is lifted after stirring it. I won't go into any more detail on what it looks like but use your imagination. I cannot, for the life of me, understand how anyone could get past the appearance.

So, I guess I don't need to worry about becoming "addicted" to this food that can be so bad for someone on Coumadin.

Gina, yeah I remember Nick Yuki posting about it. I, of course, am not concerned with coumadin, but he had me convinced to not go looking for it. Now you have really driven that home. I think Nick knew that it would probably gross out most Americans. Glad you got to see it for me, so that I don't have to. I do like the Iron Chef though. We don't get the Food Network in our town yet.

So, I assume it's safe to say that there won't be any peanut butter natto served in your kitchen?

I was actually amazed at the dishes they made with the Natto and how excited the judges were by them. Maybe it's not as awful as an ingredient but, knowing what it looks like, I don't think it will be on my list if I ever get to Japan.

However, they even made a dessert out of it. Go figure.

FYI... I am taking Nattozime, an enzyme supplement based on the natto effect, which dissolves loose fibrin in the system. And no yucky bean goo. I'll let you know if it was a good idea in about five years, assuming I'm still around from it.

Please note that I'm not advocating it for anyone to use, and it's certainly not for anyone on warfarin. But my gut feel is that it should be a good complement to aspirin use for me, as an older tissue valve guy with what one doctor described as "sticky" blood.

Best wishes,
