New obesity wonder drug makes patients lose 10% of body weight

A new obesity wonder drug, Acomplia (rimonabant), makes patients lose 10% of their body weight, according to clinical trials carried out by Sanofi-Aventis, the third largest pharmaceutical company in the world.

Sanofi-Aventis are hoping to have this drug on the market if all goes well.

According to the trials, patients on a 20mg dose lost 8.6kg while those on a placebo lost 2.3kg. This latest trial confirms a previous study (March 2004).

11.55% of the patients on the trial had to drop out due to nausea and dizziness. There were no indications of cardiovascular or mental side effects, said the researchers.

If all goes well, said Sanofi-Aventis, the drug could be on the market in 2006. If it does, Acomplia could become one of the best selling drugs ever.

Oh, my gosh-

I can't believe that they are still trying to develop a diet drug, after so many, many people were absolutely devastated by Phen-fen.

The Pulmonary Hypertension Association website is loaded with people who now have a life-threatening, progressive and incurable medical problem.

Of course, PH isn't always caused by having taken diet drugs (including Phen-fen, Redux and ephedra). My husband has it, and he did not take them.

Valvular disease has also been caused by all of these drugs.

Hello Yaps and Nancy...I remember Redux very well. I took that posion for 2 months and it has caused all of my existing heart conditions. I cant believe after all the lawsuits that they would put another drug of that nature on the market. Thanks for the info Yaps...and hello Nancy

Redux MAY have played a role in my valve problems, but all my docs think it was my radiation treatments.

I will go to my maker overweight before I take another diet pill.

Hi All,
I was on a diet pill of some kind 27 yrs ago. I don't remember the name but I really think this is why my valve had to be replace. I started having trouble back in 1992 when I started back to work after my girls was in school. First I had High B/p then they told me I had a Mitri -valve problem & just to take anitbodic before going to the dentist. No one ever told me what I could be facing yrs. down the road! From 1992-to 1999 I was in and out of the hosp. more times than I can count. Most of the DR's thought I was crazy! I guess I was a little crazy for putting up with them too!
Now after two strokes and two valve surgery my primary Dr. listens when I say something!
