Harpoon

This is a cancer thing, not heart related, but I'm killing time yet again at the office so I figured I'd share a little something.

The Relay for Life here has been going for about 6 years or so. They do it on the university's track, a 20 something hour walk, in shifts, with games and prices and "theme walks" and the like.

After dusk (they usually set it for about 10pm) they hold a luminaria ceremony. Candles are placed around the inside edge of the track, each candle bears the name of a person (or persons) that is either fighting a battle with cancer or has lost one. A few songs and speeches are made and then everything is lit up.

The deadline for photography at the newspaper is 10:30pm (sometimes earlier) and to my knowledge, no one has ever tried to shoot this part of the annual fund raiser because of that. I hussled to get everything else that needed to be done tonight so I could go shoot this. Unfortunately, it won't make the Sunday paper, I knew that going in. My hope is that maybe it will be useful next year.

Plus I was hoping stuff would come out nice for my portfolio.

This is just one of about half a dozen photos that worked out "ok" for me. I didn't try to get the girl's name, she looked like she didn't need to be bothered at that moment....

Great picture, Harpoon!
My sister has walked in the Relay for Life in Southern Illinois for several years. She does it for our mother who continues to battle nonHodgkin's lymphoma. Mom was diagnosed ten years ago and underwent chemo and radiation that slowed the progression of the disease.

I hadn't mentioned this in any of my posts about Nancy's biopsy and surgery, but I do want to say that the word cancer, and the knowledge that it is entering your life, was the worst fear I have ever had to deal with. I recognize that my fear was unfounded and I've learned to cope with the worrying and waiting. I admire everyone who takes a proactive approach to the disease, and Relay for Life is a great event. I'm glad you were able to get the photo.
