Recovery- After AVR & CABGX3

Just wondering how others have found their recovery from this.

I am doing well with my chest incision and moving about. My problem is at site of surgical cut on back of leg. Tried to stop taking pain meds also.

I am about a week out from hospital & coming on 2 weeks since surgery. How long before things heal?

I'm sure others will be around. I didn't have a cabg, but all the folks I know that did have had problems with the graft harvesting site. Most of them tell me around 4 weeks, but some have had persistent pain to this day.

Glad you're home.

I found it took about 3 weeks to heal externally; sternum cut is said to take 6-8 weeks.

I echo Mary and Ross .... the chest, about 6-8 weeks .... everyone I know that had bypass said the harvest sites were troublesome.

My son also had a CABGX3 on the first go round and another single CABG the second time. On the first surgery, he complained much more about the leg incisions than the full sternocotomy. On the second surgery he also had to get a pacemaker which seemed to overshadow the pain from both the sternocotomy and the vein harvest. I don't remember exactly how long he had pain in his legs, but it was definitely longer than his chest.

It will get better...
