RE: MSG food additive. Ican't swear to it yet

but every time I eat the Three crispy srtrips from Kentucky fried chicken outlets, I get PVCs (or PACS).

I understand that some outlets use MSG (or similar) in their seasonings and KFC is one of them.

Has anyone had a similar reaction?

Say no to fast food!

Say no to fast food!

Hello Gary,

I'm not sure what kind of AVR you underwent? Do you wear mechanical valves or another type?

While I'm no nutritional expert, the subject of diet has been brought up numerous times as it applies to so many of us. I personally don't touch deep fried, fast food anymore!

Achieving good nutritional health takes awhile to accomplish. If you're like me and paid no attention to your diet, ate or drank anything you wanted without ever thinking about it, then you've got a long road to haul to accomplish a better diet/lifestyle.

I think I have experienced MSG causing PVC problems, but I know for sure that my PVC's have literally gone away since I quite caffeine. Fast foods are a definite no-no for me now. Sodium is a big problem. I've reduced my intake of red meat and try to eat more fish. Being on Coumadin, I've limited greens. I have also added supplements like magnesium, selenium, vitamin C and E, etc.. Like I said, there's a lot to it!

Part of my "release" packet after surgery included a substantial amount of dietary information. I'm sure your cardiologist would be happy to supply you with such information.

Best regards.

C-E bovine pericardial straight ahead AVR

C-E bovine pericardial straight ahead AVR

I know my diet is far from where it needs to be: cholesterol too high, and weight along with it. When I lost the weight 10 pounds prior to and after surgery, my cholesterol dropped to under 200.

Caffeine intake is also far beyond what it should be, but all those things together never seem to cause the PVCs. B-P is in the 110/62 range no matter what I eat or don't.

However, the correlation of eating these things (I'm presupposing they have MSG in them because I bought a new pressure cooker two years ago and part of its sales promotion was that it included the "Secret" Kentucky Fried Chicken recipe and I noted one of the indgredients in the recipe was MSG) and PVCs a half day later or within a few hours is a vitrual certainty.

I just wanted to try and confirm this anecdotal evidence exclusively though I'm going to forsake them forever anyway.

For this Rookie (6 weeks Monday) What are PVC'S or PACS...I love KFC and need to know whether to stay away.....

Um, KFC is loaded with salt. If this is an issue that you have to be careful of, I would forgo it. Maybe one meal could mean a CHF incident.

Take care and be well.

Wasn't there a statistic out that said KFC and Burger King had the most fat, salt and cholesterol of all the big fast food chains? Or was that info I got from Weight Watchers.

It's hard to stay away from fast food. I love McDonald's french fries but haven't had any in probably 6 months. Seems like the only fast food I do these days is Subway.

My friend's dad is an iternal medicine doc and like to tell a story about a patient of his who went to White Castle and had 6 whities and keeled over from a massive heart attack.

Thanks for the info Mara... whatever whities are I think I'll stay away from them! lol

Granbonny: PVCs-Premature Ventricular Contractions

Granbonny: PVCs-Premature Ventricular Contractions

PACs-Premature Atrial Contractions.

Both feel the same, as "Skipped beats" or extra beats, not necessarily harmful but annoying, and if extended, worrisome as a precursor to arrhythmias.

Thank you Gary..Like I said I am a rookie..6 weeks Monday..I have not watched what I have been eating..Just wanted all appealing food to gain back energy..( KFC and Burger King) Now I am ready to give up that half cup coffee and all coke products...My b/p is good along with my pulse rate..I am going to try to eat healthy..no fried foods and watch salt.....My INR is staying between 2.5 and 3.5....Hope to get a home testing Pro time System...Love the site..Don't have to call my card.'s office with silly questions..Can find out from you feloow Valvers what I need to know...

KFC, fat and points

KFC, fat and points

This is interesting in light of what I have learned at Weight Watchers and from my daughter the vet tech. Just last week she showed me an article about a vet research test where mice were fed fast food---specifically KFC chicken and Mickey D's burgers. Their blood was tested before and after eating ( about 15 and 45 min. after). Their lipids jumped 45% at 15 min and were up 60 some % at 45 min. Heart anomallies (PVCS and PACS I am assuming also increased greatly. The more I learn about nutrition and what is in our processed food, the less I want to eat. Glad most of our meat is raised right here on our farm.

Wow!

I wonder if these mice know their brothers who were involved in early Coumadin/Warfarin research?

What would we know today without these creatures?

I thank God for all researchers, technicians and medical experts who's job it is to understand human health issues.
