Herbal Supplements..a no=no

Herbal Supplements..a no=no

Nanvy, sounds to me like all Herbal supplements would be a no-no if one is on Coumadin..Was thinking about taking some Kava-Kava to help me sleep but will stick to my Tylenol P.M. :D

Hi Granbonny-

When Joe was last in the hospital, he had lost a lot of weight. One day, magically, a container of Enliven! appeared on his food tray. That's a fruit flavored nutritional supplement.

I looked at the ingredients, and there was Vitamin K, each container had 25% of the normal daily amount. It arrived with each food tray. I nearly blew a gasket. When I complained about it to the nurse, the next day, a can of Boost arrived with each meal. The ingredients had Vitamin K, 40 % of the normal daily amount in each can. That arrived with each meal. That gave me the opportunity to have a little chit-chat with the hospital dietician, a very young assertive gal. She was totally clueless as to what the Vitamin K would do to my husband. Hard to believe. I told her that I wouldn't dream of giving him a Vitamin K pill.

I guess, she had never met a rather older assertive gal.

I won. Joe never drank any of that. I brought some Ovaltine and Nestle Quick from home.

So, ya just never know. And neither do a lot of other people who should know.

How about other pain relievers?

How about other pain relievers?

Hello Nancy,

I just love the way you watch out for your husband. He?s a lucky guy! :)

Hey Bonnie...

I?ve been having head aches lately and noticed on the bottle of the Advil I take that it says ....

?Alcohol Warning: if you consume 3 or more alcoholic drinks every day, ask your doctor whether you should take ibuprofen or other pain relievers/fever reducers. Ibuprofen may cause stomach bleeding.?

Would this relate to us coumadin takers?? I know we aren't supposed to take Aspirin, but thought Ibuprofen was okay.

Tylenol only for Coumadin patients.

Tylenol only for Coumadin patients.

I was told to take only Tylenol for pain. Tylenol doesn't really work that well, so you suffer through the pain with little or no relief.

Ingredents on Pill bottles

Ingredents on Pill bottles

I don't know how anyone but Superman can read the ingredents on pill bpttles. I had my pharmacist to read Tylenol P.M. to see if it was o.k. to take with Cumadin. It was....Rain, if I get a headache(never had them before surgery) I take Tylenol Extra Strength but with a pair of reading glasses from drug store, under a spot light, I made out a warning about the 3 drinks a day..causing liver damage:confused: ..Best thing to do, ask your local Pharmacist...About the headaches, It has been really hot in Georgia this summer. I'm sure when wether cools off..we will all start feeling better. Bonnie

Nancy...Thank you for that list...we're as lucky to have you as Joe is..you're watching after all of us!!!!

Rain...Only Tylenol for me, too..Doc says so! All others affect the INR. I take Tylenol #3 if I have to along with an Xtra Strength Tylenol!

Bonnie...I know the printing on these bottles gets smaller every year!!!! It's hard to read even when magnified..it didn't used to be that way..lol!

Rain,

Ibuprofen is one of the worst for causing GI bleeding. It should not be taken with warfarin.

However, I can find no report of anyone ever being harmed by naproxen. But Tylenol XS 2 tablets is still the safest. But alcohol and Tylenol is bad for the liver.

Is the fire at Mesa Verde on your side of the park?

Can't tell you how long I suffered from Migraines and menstral pain because of unterirne fibroid inflammation. Imgaine the pain of your cycle x10!

Those of us taking Coumadin.....it seems for serve pain we have no other choice than something in he narcotic. I really don't like that idea, but refuse to suffer. Nobody should have to. For me it's the difference between being able to get out of bed at those times.......or take the pill.

Pain 'was' controlling my life. It's just a matter of finding a way to manage it. Tylenol never cuts it! Works great on fever.

Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the info!

Hello Al,

I?ve never heard of ?naproxen?. I?m really in the dark when it comes to meds. But I?m getting better all the time. :)

You can see the fire on Mesa Verde from my upstairs window at night. It?s burning a part that hasn?t burned... so it?s moving like crazy. Did you know the face burned off the ?Old Ute??? He looks like he got a major hair cut.

I was at Black Canyon one time and saw a fire that looked like a camp fire. I mentioned to the ranger that I didn't think there was a place to build a fire over there. He sort of laughed and said that it was a forest fire over by Aspen about 100 miles away. For people who haven't seen them there is just no way to describe one. Still it is hard to imagine a fire the size of one down by Show Low. We used to live in Payson and I know the fire burned for about 60 miles along highway 264 but still it seems unreal.

Right on, Al... I think you have to have experienced the fires to understand how devastating they can be. And it totally changes our living environment. The air is hot and heavy and hard to breath... you almost have to stay inside.

It?s really weird. You can?t see the stars at night and during the day the sky is white instead of blue. It reminds me of visiting my relatives in CA. But the fire and smoke make spectacular sunsets.

Pretty scary when it?s so close to home. The back of our family farm is at the base of the mesa that?s on fire. At times it looks like its snowing... it?s the ash falling from the sky! Thank goodness this fire isn?t nearly as big as the last time Mesa Verde burned. But it is threatening some of the main ruins.

You should see people when they see my license plates. Hilarious! :)

Al Lodwick-
Maybe you have some insight on Advil.
I thought that ibuprofen was so dangerous because the bleeding can start so suddenly. My brother thinks it should have never been made OTC. I read that people with any sort of health problems, diabetes, lung problems, heart problems etc should never take ibuprofen. Can you confirm any of this?
-Mara

Mara,

You are right that the danger is in sudden bleeding.

Your brother's stance is ultra-cautious. However, there are enough choices on the market, both Rx and non-Rx that one can be ultra-cautious and still have many alternates.

Fiorcet for severe headaches or migraines

Fiorcet for severe headaches or migraines

I am given Fiorcet for my migraines which I seem to get often. Was put on Toprol XL which seemed to keep them away for a few months, but the're back.......in fact started with an aura today while food shopping. Dipping into my Fiorcet, and if they get too bad, I call for a few Percocet. Tylenol just isn't strong enough (my migraines last 4-5 weeks).
However, on the down side, my LFT's are rather high. ? from long term use of Fiorcet?? Not sure. Seeing the liver specialist in two weeks. I am very anxious for that appt. as I don't really want to deal with another medical issue in my life, but I will make the best of it. There is always someone worse off than me, so I count my lucky stars.
So Rain, if your headaches are persistant or severe, try getting an Rx of Fiorcet. (Tylenol with barbital). It should work.
Good luck.

Thanks, Gisele!

Thanks, Gisele!

Hey Gisele,

Thanks! :) I?ve been arguing with my cardio and PCP about my headaches. I don?t think they are ?migraines?.... I think they're caused from a truck wreck I was in when I was seventeen. My brother was hauling a load of gravel in a MACK truck and it had a blow out. My head broke the windshield. I was in the hospital for a week and I don?t even remember it. Anyway.. ever since then, sometimes I have these horrible headaches that start with pain in my neck.

The way I understand it they prescribe different meds for migraines than the other types of headaches. He gave me a prescription for LORTAB. I?ll see how it works. What pain... I?m willing to try just about anything when it really hurts. You never appreciate feeling good until you feel so rotten.

Be careful with the Fioricet. It increases your need for warfarin.

Thanks Allodwick
